Mileage suprise?

I fulled up my car on friday.

I remembered to reset the odometer and set off. I look at my fuel gauge today and it's JUSt past a half tank, then I remember to look at my ODO
847 KILOMETERS!?! wow, is that some good mileage? I've never seen that high a odometer reading at that spot on the fuel gauge. the longest tank to date before this one was 734 kilometers from full to reserve light.

this all after I cleaned up the turbo....

You are getting number error somewhere.

526 miles with half a tank is about 40MPG, physically impossible for a 300SD.

456 miles for a full tank is low 20's which is more realistic.

My speedo works fine. needle's a bit jumpy when it's cold, but that shouldn't be enough to throw off the numbers THAT much.
the PO was seeing numbers up around there. I can drive to work and back and all my city driving for two weeks on a tank.

If you want to brag, GPS it.

Speedo/odo readings mean next to nothing, factory error was <=5% when it was new and it hasn't gotten more accurate in twenty years.

Just sayin'

well, the only road speed bench mark I got here is the sentry radar unit that pops up in different places here in town, and with the tires that I'm runing now, I'm only 2km faster than what my speedometer is telling me.
remember, this is ALL city driving..well small city driving. I do about 5 minutes on the highway 4 times a day.

940km Reserve light still off...
I bet I hit 1000Km before the light even comes on.

last half a tank went down like a rock as they always do..
I don't really understand how it can be a numerical error of anykind. it'd have to be such a HUGE error

but really it's pretty simple.
1. I filled my tank up..I mean RIGHT up
2. When I got back in my car I pushed the ODO reset button and drove off, and havn't added any fuel or touched my ODO at all.

so I think I'll believe what my car is telling me. untill I have a road trip or something then I can do a more accurate reading.

The PO is my employer so I talk to him all the time and he's not suprised. he was seeing tank distances up around there too.

Not possible......940km is about 610 miles.....I drove mine once till it ran out, and I got 24.2mpg......and it stalled at 514.3 miles. Which accounts for the 21 gallons in the tank. No way you can go 600+ miles in a SD.

I routinely go 600 + miles in my 300SDL/SD's. But it is always a bit close.

Doesn't the W116 have a slightly larger tank than the W126? I think its 25 - 26 gallons as opposed to 23.8.

When did they only have a 21.3 gallon tank?

I have 90 liter tanks (23.8 gallons) in all three of mine.

Hmm.....Maybe its 21 + reserve of 2.8..... which would be 23.8....

Even so, it still proves that its impossible to go 600+ miles in a SD, they only get about 24-27mpg average. Even at 27mpg thats only 561 miles till you are into the reserve, and 642 till you've coasted to the side of the road. Its impossible to be over 600 miles and not be well into the remaining 2.8 gallons....

the 116 DIESEL has a 82 litre tank. 82 Litres plus some more I'm sure till you can see foam.

Well, I turned the key this morning and my fuel light came on at 980 KM
and I know from driving the car I still have two days worth of trips to work on my light.

OH YEAH, because I have the burden of proof. I drove to the truck stop where there is a Speedometer check lane and my ODO is BANG ON . so

You went through a speedometer check lane, not an odometer check lane. The odometer can still give incorrect readings while the speedometer can be spot on. As mentioned before, you need to do some GPS verified readings and report back.
