GREAT THREAD!
I have a new w126 500 SEC w a cooling problem Mr MB found the thermo sticking so it was changed It still runs hot & when I got home from the shop was over 110 I was checking radiator the external llooks good I did touch the rear fan while inspecting though I was careful as I thought it was not good to turn some things if they are on a clutch I recall & didn't know if it was good or not that the blades turned wo any noticeable resistance. Could this also be affecting the engine temp? I wonder why the mechanic didn't notice or check it while trouble shooting the redline I had when I brought it into the shop. It's been 105 here so I have delayed test driving that the mechanic suggested but I can't see how it would have cured itself since the drive hime from the shop the other day I checked the coolant its brimming He suggested perhaps air in the system as the thermo was sticking. There are no leaks. Great to find this thread PS this is a gas engine Does it sound like there is something wrong w the fan? I do know it runs while the engine is idling. I idled it the day after the repair in the garage. The thermo opened when it got up to about 80 as the top hose got hot. I didn;t check bottom hose Will have to do that & top of radiator as least as I could feel was evenly hot. Any sugggestions as to try to get it to run cooler It is a 83 500 SEC Euro 5L engine so I am not sure what its normal operating temp is but at idle in the garage after about 15 min it crept up from 80 to over 100 so I shut it down. Thanks! |

Camelot Shadow- I do remeber on a 350SDL I had the temp gauge was showing pretty high but everything seemed to check out. It turned out that the coolant temperature sender was faulty. I put in a new one and it was reading the correct temp, if all else checks out give that a try.

Zack, another word of advice. Whenever you open the hood, turn the exposed end of the left-side fan blade to ensure that the belt is intact. A small stone can dislodge the belt. This leads to reduced cooling, and I've heard of one case of the belt damaging the condenser.

But when I got home from the shop I could hardly open the hood had to use a towel to wrap my hands as it was burning my hands. So I don't feel its just a faulty temp gauge |

Zack,
Just make sure your fans are spinning in the correct direction. There was a model midyear change and some fans come prewired to spin in wrong direction. They should push air through radiator and condensor. WHen I installed mine they were drawing air out through grille. Its any easy fix, just have to take plug apart and reverse the wires.
