Question 87 300 SDL Starting ?

Just recently got an 87 300 sdl and it only starts when in neutral. What could be the cause of this? I will have many more questions so hope all will bear with me. Also a newbie.

Welcome to the obsession!

It is probably the neutral safety switch that is preventing you from starting in Park. Do a search on the forum to find out how to replace it.

Here is a tip, do not use the search function built into the board. Use Google Advanced search and use mercedesshop.com as the domain to search.

Do some searches on the OM603 engine and the W126 body for lots of great info.

I am sure that you will be happy with your car. This site is a great source for information and to ask questions. You should also join the Mercedes Club MBUSA.com and your local chapter.

Most of all enjoy your car!

Good luck

thanks for info, where is a good place to buy parts? I just had to replace the 2 front brake calipers $200 with new pads.

Check the bushings on the shift linkage first, under the car, between the trans and the shift lever. That is most likely the problem. If they are both good (there are two, one on each end of the rod) then the switch is the next likely culprit.
