His sig has an 80 240D and 85 300D so I'm assuming it's these two cars he's referring to.

My 1980 240D had the R4 compressor. But, I know there are some W123 body structure differences between early and late 1980 models so there might be a split-year difference.

1980 might be the break point mid year between the older style your compressor mounted on the frankenstein bracket and the newer style gm compressor down low. I would avoid the older style at all costs! What a botch!
