From what I have been able to find, the Hydrocarbon R-12 replacements are the only ones that potentially could be BETTER thermodynamically than R-12 and also transport oil properly.

I have had good success with Duracool and hc-12a. I'm in the middle of the project you are undertaking on a 83 300 sd and plan to charge the system with hc-12a. My 84 300sd and 87 300sdl cool well with the hydrocarbon refrigerants.

I have seen conflicting information about the oil transport part. Some of the seemingly reliable information says that hydrocarbons are too light to properly move the oil through the system.

I used hydrocarbon refrigerant in an old Grand Prix for several years with no noticeable, adverse effects. It cooled good and never broke or got noisy.

As to the safety concerns, most of the cars on the road have gasoline under pressure under the hood, how is that any safer? It's not.

Sheeeesh Maybe I should go back to R12. The PO did the ?conversion" (which I think was no more than putting on the R134 couplers and pumping her full of stuff).
