Odd idiot light occurence--any explanation
My wife was driving the 77 300d today when the battery and two brake lights on the left of the cluster lit up. She shut it off and restarted and they were still on. Called me but when I arrived and started it, the problem was gone.
What might have caused it? I have no hypotheses. Apologies on the spelling of occurrence. It's now too late to correct it.

Usually, the alternator diodes are the culprit when you get all kinds of dashboard lights for no reason. But, I fail to grasp how the diode could fix itself after you arrived.
...........maybe the strength of mind of a philospher...... |

There are six diodes in your alternator - like stated above when they go south they are gonners. Possibly was the car being driven on wet streets?

Update: Battery is now dead, or at least dead enough it won't turn over. Battery light briefly came on for a few seconds last night but today was running with no indication of problems. So I'm thinking something has happened to the alternator/ regulator/brushes. Didn't have a change to get a good reading on the output of the alternator when it was running since my digital multimeter didn't seem to be working right. I suppose it could also be a battery problem. Got it on the charger at the moment. When it charges up and starts I'll take some more readings.

Sounds like a dead alternator. When a bunch of dash lights come on for no reason its usualy the alt dieing.

What's the story on replacement alternators? When I look it up on Fastlane, it shows a Bosch replacement with an internal regulator meaning that the external regulator has to be bypassed. Has anyone replaced the original (which I'm pretty sure has an external regulator) with one from Fastlane without? What's involved? Should I get the existing one rebuilt or look for a rebuilt model with an external regulator?
