606 fan clutch for 602
my 602 needs a new fan clutch and the word on the street is that I can use a 606 fan clutch (much cheaper, same thing).
The question I have is, can I use the existing aluminium (sic - South African spelling, I'm feeling non-american today) fan with the 606 clutch? And Do I need any extra hardware, etc. I don't want to get the fan out and then have to put it all back becuase I don't have 3 bolts. That would really bite. Anybody? Bueller?

Here's the detail on the 606.962 fan whihc you can compare to yours.
There ae 3 pcs #11 bolt; not certain on the other but believe it is only one. http://detali.ru/cat/oem_mb2.asp?TP=1&F=210025&M=606%2E962&GA=722%2E608&CT=M&cat=19T&SID=20&SGR=030&SGN=02

Wow! Cool reference, thanks. It even tells the bolt size and threads.

RAD fan clutch
My lesson for the day,Thank You!
ACM fan clutch for the 606.912 motor $114.95 BEHR fan clutch for the 602.962 motor $192.95 606.912 fan clutch #6062000122 (Mercedes) (non-turbo) [thermostat opens @ 85 degrees] 602.962 fan clutch #6062000022 (Mercedes) (Turbo) [thermostat opens @ 80 degrees] I'm trying to find someone who can compare both with the Mark 1 ...'cause they are both stocked separately [with no tie-ins in the parts system] Last edited by compress ignite; 05-01-2007 at 05:45 PM. |

I can get a new 606 fan clutch for under $80 delivered, that is why I am interested.
The FSM says the fan clutch on the 602 opens when the air hitting it is around 70 C (which equals about 90C coolant temperature, they say) Anybody got any more info on replacing the silicon to repair the existing clutch? I like that idea.

I put a new clutch on my 602, there are any different clutches that engage at different temperatures and different RPMs, also different max. RPM where they start to disengage (the do not let the fan exceed something like 3500rpm).
You'd have to be sure that the clutch is matched to the engine's operating parameters, and also that it is matched to the fan's mass and max RPM. Also offset and bolt circle. Remember also that the platic fans stretch and flex more than the alloy fan at max speeds, be sure you have the radiator clearance. The stock clutch seemed cheap to me considering what it does, and a little polish and teflon coating made the stock metal fan really quiet.

do a search under member name OILYRAG .
I have found his comments on adding fluid to the clutch...But i can't yet figure out how to link to it. Some where there is a tutorial from an SL owner on how to Permanently engage your fan clutch (also adjustments to engagement temperature)BUT I can't find it right now. I'll have to agree with Babymog's comments however ,'cause I do not want to have to develop a paranoia about the Temp guage. |
