Newbie - 87 300d doesn't shift

HI,

I've just purchased a 1987 300d sight unseen (got a good price) According to the seller, the transmission is no good, but he hasn't brought it to a shop.

The problem is that it doesn't shift out of 1st.

I've been through the archives and I've found a lot to do with shifting problems such as flaring or late shifts.

Has anyone heard of this as an issue?

Mike

Could be low fluid level or clogging filter. Have you checked the condition of the fluid yet?

When I bought my 91 300D it had the same problem. It was a broken gear on the governor in the transmission. The gear was made of plastic, cost about $2.00 or so from the dealer. Transmission removal is NOT necessary. The governor is under a cover at the left rear of the trans case.

Kick down switch under gas pedal may be a factor. Carpet gets out of position and it stays depressed.

wow - guys, thank you all for the ideas. I'm obviously hoping I can avoid transmission replacement.... I'm glad someone else has had the problem!

If any one has anything else to check, I am interested to hear about it. This is my 1st Benz....

Even with the kickdown engaged all the time, it will still shift to 2nd when it hits redline. Mine does, I've tried it . May be different on earlier models though.
