It may also just be your particular 240 that does those things.

It should have no problem running flat out/top speed, especially with a rebuilt engine. I run my 617 flat out sometimes for a while and it enjoys it just fine. I am still waiting for the day I can get one. I want either a nice 240 manual...or a C220 auto or manual. While keeping my SD of course. I've put waaaaaaay too much $$$ into it to ever even consider selling it.

yeah, on my 240d, we open her up on a flat stretch for a while. most of the time at 80-85. temperature never changes with speed, i don't think it should.

as you run faster the temp will come up a bit nearing the top speed. this is normal.

it will come up pulling hills too.

I've driven my 240D on a couple of 1000+ mile trips, it seems happy up to about a steady 75 mph. Over about 75 it seems like it's straining a bit, probably OK for a short time but not for hours at a time.

75 mph with standard or auto, or does it really matter much?

Mine's an auto, a manual may give you a few more MPH at the same rpm. I would judge by the sound/feel of the engine. I just don't like to keep it at 100% for extended amounts of time.

I checked the oil pressure gauge, it does go down when I turn off the car. But nothing else changes it from pegging at 3 when the car is on. So this is a good thing then right?

What does it read during the glow cycle? Does the guage go up as you crank the engine? When my GP fuse blew the oil guage started to climb during extanded cranking.

When switched off the it should be at 0. When starting it should rise fairly quickly to 3 and stay there until it warms up when it should be below that at idle. It should not stay pegged at 3 all the time. Slightly below 3 to around 2 should be about normal when at operating temperature and idling, especially after a long run. For instance if you come off a freeway and stop at a light. If it's still pegged at 3 then as I've suggested earlier see if your idle speed control knob is turned all the way anti-clockwise and try adjusting it clockwise to reduce the revs at idle. Also does it have the correct amount of oil in it or is it over filled? The higher the level on the oil pressure gauge the better certainly, but permanently pegged at 3 except when it's switched off with no lower pressure at idle just sounds excessive to me.

- Peter.
