Power Steering question!
I have a 79 300SD in excellent condition. Have maintained timely and normal service for my car (oil/fluid changes, etc.,...) but in the last month or so...have started hearing a "yawwing" sound when I turn the wheel. It's normally much more pronounced upon starting the car early in the day and eases off the longer I drive - although it's still noticeable when I drive.
Warm weather (I live in Los Angeles) seems to make this less pronounced as well. I still have the original Mercedes owners book and it mentions power steering fluid as somehow connected with the Transmission fluid (?) but haven't found any specific valve for power steering fluid. I'm about to just take it to my mechanic but don't want to bring it in only to be told...just add some poewer steering. Does anyone out there know what I can do? Is there an actual power steering intake under the hood? Or is this a sign of a different issue? |

I assume that's a 116 series? I had a 79 280S and I dont recall any connection between the power steering and the tranny. I'd first just try topping up the PS and see if it cures it before taking it to a shop.

Actaully, it is the 123 series.
The problem about topping off is that I'm not sure where under the hood the power steering cap/line is. Nothing in my book tells me where it is. Tranmission,oil,brake...yes. power steering? Not sure. Last edited by Chetbaker; 03-28-2007 at 07:50 PM. |

location
facing the car from the front, the pump and resevoir is on the right hand side near the front top of the motor - it is belt driven so that will reduce your options. Also, locate the steering box on the drivers side inner fender and you should be able to follow the high and low pressure lines back to the pump. Use the search for posts by me - I did a steering box swap that has pictures.
The resevoir has a little black bottle cap sized screw that you losen. Directly below that little black cap is a 4" or so metal disc that covers the resevoir. It's spring loaded. There is a filter in there as well. Good luck

Put it in quick
Better put that stuff in quick. If you're low, you're really screwed.

I had a similar sound in my sd a few months back when I first got it. The pump was nearly full but the fluid looked dark brown. I flushed it out per instructions I found on the web. Also installed a new filter. The sound went away.

Regular ATF should be fine for the PS right? I just had to replace the return hose on mine so I lost a little fluid in the process.
