It's time to replace the fuel cap.

By the front of the driver side rear wheel there is a little rubber valve. That's the tank vent. clean the rubber bit and blow a little air into the tank with the fuel cap off.

I think it's not supposed to whoosh, this would indicate either pressure in the tank or vacuum. vacuum can cause car to run poorly and reduce the fuel tank capacity. pressure can cause leaks and damage components.

I don't think these cars have a vented cap. The vent is separate as Forced was describing.

A whoosh is not normal, it will cause your IP to work harder while trying to pump fuel, It can cause a no start or hard start condition. Dont replace the fuel cap, that would be a waste of money.

Actually, it's all a matter of degree. According to the W123 service manual, the relief valve will. in fact, permit a certain degree of positive or negative pressure in the fuel tank.
So, a slight whoosh could be considered normal. |

Well, when I remove the fuel cap on my 123 cars, I get a hissss, like a bottle of soda. This only happens, when the car has an empty tank though. That's how I know she's really empty...
