The 603 engines can last well past 300,000 miles if they are taken care of and not overheated. Very long lived engine with proper care. If the rest of the car is good, you could always just find it a new engine in the worst scenario. Not too hard to do. I bet the engine is fine, have a mechanic competent in MB diesels look it over.

Yes, it's worn out. Tell me where you are located so I can come take it off your hands.

You got a steal. Since it is so nice with so many records, keep records and put some good insurance on it if you can, and drive her careful.

I agree with all the replies here. This is a keeper.
Finding a Merc with 250k that has a good interior is the hard part -- 5 minutes on ebay will confirm that for ya.

Personally, I'd seek a 2nd opinion before I swapped out the IP. There are alot of cheapy possibilities that could be causing a fuel delivery problem (tank screen, filters, etc.).

Look through the papers and make sure it had the "open campaign" exhaust work done (trap oxidizer?). A stealership can also tell you if you give them the VIN. If most of the work was done by a non-dealer, it might not have been done.

Replace all the suction side fuel lines before you get all excited -- when they get old, they crack and leak air in, so the car runs terribly.

What are the symptoms? IPs very rarely go bad.

When I said "well past 300,000 miles" that was code language for "can run for eternity".
