Question for those who have replaced engine mounts

Ok. I had my engine and tranny mounts replaced yesterday. (Amongst other things). Car feels vastly improved. But I do notice a quite significant side to side shake at idle that I've not noticed before. Definately side to side, not up and down. This is with the idle control knob turned to slowest speed. If I turn the Idle control up about two thirds of the way it smooths out completely. It's possible this sideways shake was there all along and I just havent noticed it because of the generally awful shaking and buzzing going on with the old mounts. Before it was never really smooth even with the idle speed turned all the way up to max. My question is. Do others with brand new engine and tranny mounts also notice this sideways shake at idle or do I have something else wrong? I can also visually see the engine swaying slightly from side to side which it never did before. I'm assuming this is because the new rubber is allowing movement whereas before it was pretty much just smashing against the metal of the frame causing the whole car to vibrate.

- Peter.

I remember it taking about a thousand miles for the mounts to "break in" or something like that. They were really rough at first then they smoothed out and are much better than the old ones, just took some time to settle down.

I was wondering if there might be a "break in" period. I hope it'll be the same for mine.

I noticed a similar condition after renewing the three mounts. It became much less noticible after a few weeks. I presume that the new mounts need some time to "settle in."

having just replaced my 3 mounts as well, i noticed the same exact thing. good. at least im not alone. did anyone who noticed this as well change your engine shocks?
i noticed i could get my idle high enough to smooth it out, but it was a little too high for me. since i dont have a tach, im not sure how high it was, but it just seemed unnaturally too high.

When I replaced my engine mounts, the only thing I detected was a complete lack of any vibration whatsoever.

Which on more than one ocassion made me think I'd stalled it.

Interesting you should mention engine shocks. The mechanic asked me if I wanted new engine shocks as well as the exploded diagram of the parts on his computer showed them. However my car doesn't have them and there are no apparent mounting points for them. He couldnt find any trace of mounting points either so I think in my case they dont apply. I know the 300D is supposed to have them. Does anyone know if there is a certain year or engine/chassis number when these were introduced to 240Ds?. My car is an 81 and that seems to be a transition year for quite a few components.

My 1980 240D has one engine shock on the driver's side of the block; on the passenger side, there's not even a place to put one. Also, it has a center T-mount just behind the oil pan.

What is a center T-mount and what does it mount to?

Frankly, this sounds like normal behavior to me. Book spec for your car is around 750 at idle, and if its smooth at that speed I wouldn't worry about it. I've gone through 3 sets of motor mounts during my ownership, and I can't say I recall the same symptoms that others here have noticed.
