Open the hood further?

I've seen pics of w123's with the hood opened almost vertical. Mine goes up about a normal angle, but I'm always banging my head on the grill.
Is there a modification that can be done to open the hood any further?

No modification required, you just need to learn how to do it.

Open hood. Release lever on driver side and raise slightly higher. Release lever on
passenger side. Voila!

The levers are on the hinge itself. Sometimes you have to lower the hood just a little to release the levers.

I wish the W115's did the same thing. That grille is a mean headknocker.

I was sorely disappointed when I got my W116 home and found out it didn't do the same thing as the W123's. I love that little feature. Its save my head so many times and gives you great light when you're working in the engine bay. Watch the hinges as you slowly raise the hood and you'll see the little tabs that you have to release to make it go vertical.

124s also have that feature. I'm not excessively tall, but it is a nice thing.
Clever guys, those Germans.

on my 79 TD, the hinges are a little distorted, I have to hook the springs back up after I am done raising the hood.
I like the old dodge pickup hood better, the full open is built into the hinges to lift full 90 with no latch to lift.

They are a little out of the way but find the hinge bushings mounted to the body metal in the engine compartment and lubricate them. Otherwise they eventually seize and tear the bushing out of the metal. This is bad because the repair is a little tedious I found. So easy to avoid the need for the repair as well. Repair a couple of them and you will forever after lubricate them once in awhile. This I can almost guarantee.

Yes, just push the lever down on the driver's side, then repeat on the passenger side and everything under the hood is easy to see and replace. The fully-opening hood feature is probably the small thing I love most about my sister's car (the 240D). Every time I work on my car (Volvo 240) I wish it had the same hinge design.

We found quite a few cool little features about the car while reading through an owner's manual one day. Our original disappeared long ago, but you can get new replacements from Mercedes Classic Tech Lit or find a used one in a bookstore or junkyard.

I have had a few folks drop by my place, knowing I'm into these "oil burners", who were amazed and taken aback when I opened their hood ....all the way LOL

Figures, a simple but ingenious feature staring me in the face and I keep bumping my head

Thanks for the enlightenment...I guess I should read the manual again, a little more closely.

Yup, even the 07 S600 and S65 AMG do. What great cars.

Too bad the older ones (116, 107, 114/115, and older cars) don't have this feature. I almost always use this position when checking anything especially if light is an issue. Just park the car so that the light is right above the engine (in an underground parking garage with fluorescent lights) then open it up to vertical. Just make sure if you're in a low garage that the grille doesn't hit the ceiling! Same with the tailgate of wagons.
