Engine Removal tips

Hey, does anybody have any good engine removal tips for me? This week I'll be pulling the 617.910 out of my 115 76 300D. I picked up the factory manuals off of ebay, and I've got myself an engine lift and stand. I still need the part that the lift attaches to, the bar with chains thingie (I'm not sure what it's called..?). Do you guys know of a certain model of this thing that works well with the 617?

Anyway, I'll be takin tons of picks and dumping them in my flickr, so stay tuned! And please, any tips would be appretiated.

Load leveler is the item you are looking for.

Yes and a load leveler is not specific to any one car. You will have to be creative and find good points to bolt your chains to.

I have never pulled a diesel engine from a 115. I have pulled a gas engine from its gas powered brother, which I believe is a 114. It was straight forward. I pulled the hood and the radiator so that I could pull the engine without pulling the transmission. Many people like to pull them both as a unit, but I prefer to leave the transmission in place.

The rest of it is just finding things that must come loose and take them loose.

Good luck,

And whatever you do, do not touch the IP. Otherwise, you'll be taking this engine out also.

I've done them w/ and w/o the tranny attached. Would recommend pulling both at once (like Larry said), then bolting up the new engine (to tranny)outside the car, then re-inserting.

Fun job I thought. Enjoyed it because I wasn't pressed for time.

Thanks for the advice! I'm actually not swapping engines- I'm gonna try my hand at rebuilding the one that's in there. I think leaving the transmission in the car is a really good idea for me right now, since I have no real idea what I'm doing.
Hopefully after the weekend I'll have some cool pics to share with everyone!
