Exclamation W126 Manuals no longer available on CD

I've confirmed, by calling MB USA, the manuals on CD that used to be available for the W126 are no longer.

If one needs this information, one must pay MB $20 to login to their site and can then download what is needed. God help you if you have less than DSL or a cable modem.

The W126, as the veterans know, didn't get a Clymer or Haynes manual --- and now it does not have a 'CD' from MB.

...Even more reason to develop the WIKI, FAQ, and 'photo procedures'.

If there were no copyright laws, you could copy and sell.

I haven't ordered from them but did you try Performance Products? They have the W126 CD (99-385F) for $39.95. However, if MBUSA can send it as a ZIP file, then $20 is a bargain and it wouldn't take long. hmmm.......

That would be a pretty large zip file....the CD's contain over 645 megs of data, I have them archived on our fileserver here and thats how much space they take up. Zipped maybe it could shrink it a little but most of the space is taken by images, which are already compressed, so it'd probably still be about 610 megs. So about 2 years on dialup. I could download that in about 6-7 minutes...

I downloaded mine from these guys: http://www.manualsunlimited.com/index.php

They also give one the option of ordering a CD directly.

There are a ton of burned copies out there, I'm not worried. Worst case I'll just buy the paper manuals.

If the CD's are no longer being distributed by MBUSA, then I highly doubt they'd begrudge us diehards making copies for each other for no charge... After all, what money are they losing?

Hmmm. This makes me question the future of the W123 CD manuals. Good thing I already got my set. I went ahead and got them since Skinnerbox and Braingears went down when I was in the middle of my engine overhaul, of course.

I don't know the status of Rep. Barton of Texas' bill, "Motor Vehicle Owner's Right to Repair", but I believe it was introduced in 2005. Whatever it is, I find MBUSA in violation of the spirit, if not the letter, of Congress's intention to have repair information readily available to owners and independent technicians. By discontinuing the "readily" available aspect, MBUSA stands on shaky ground should it enforce proprietory rights to the CD repair information. If anything, I think distribution of copies of their service/repair information may be an American duty.

The paper manuals are still availible afiak. They just cost a lot, but these are low production European cars so that kind of comes with the territory.
