I have purchased gas cars that the oil has dropped a quart or more on a hundred and twenty five mile trip when I drove them home. These cars normally only burnt very little oil between changes. I suspect as a little oil was consumed the level was made up in condensate. What I think happened was they were only used on short trips around the city since their last oil change. Really never ever warmed up enough to deal with the condensation. Of course a far worse problem in cooler weather.
Remember at one time oil changes were recommended at 1000 mile intervals. Oils have come a long way since then but certain reasons for the low time oil changes do remain that technology has not overcome. This factor alone is a good reason to do the recommended oil changes alone. Mind the acumulated acid when the buffers are gone. What actually caused the oil level to drop with my cars was that at sustained high speeds the accumulated condensate (water) boiled off on the longer high speed drives home. You also want to normalise your high oil level to make sure that is the cause of the gurgling sound. Just in case the high oil level is not. . If it is the cause you will feel better. This is not an oil thread is it? Sometimes they are difficult to identify. Last edited by barry123400; 01-02-2007 at 11:34 PM. |

no this isnt a oil thread, although ive tried to stay commited to using mobil 1 only. But another forum member is offering some synthetic Amsoil 15w40 that i might just use instead of this shell rotella 5w40.
Hopefully putting in 8 quarts of the amsoil will cure this gurgly problem. And im hoping that it isnt my turbo that isnt eating up the oil, because if it is im in big trouble....

Funny you mention Amsoil. I saw a distributor location on El Camino in San Carlos near my house and thinking of buying their synthetic. That lighter than expected color you saw is probably the Rotella synthetic vs dino, motor oil. Synthetics are supposed to stay cleaner much much longer than dino oil.
Did you solve the mystery yet? I'm worried about your turbo too. Check your air filter housing again. My gasser Subie burned 1.5 quarts on a roundtrip SF to LA in the summer. 900 miles, it didn't surprise me, I kept 2 extra quarts in the trunk, just like you did. Good luck, Frankie

BTW-My Subie is a Turbo too. I was told by the Subaru dealership mechanic that turbos definitely burn a little more oil than non turbos.

Check the exhaust pipe for oil. If the internal turbo seals have failed, only slightly, then the oil went thru the turbo and out the tailpipe. Look for an oil residue on the inside of the tail pipe. It should normally be a dry soot.
Otherwise to lose 4-5 quarts during hard driving and not seeing it all over the car is not normal. but if it was thru the turbo it could have burned it up and you may not have noticed the smoke. Also remove the air filter and see if the oil is being sucked up the oil separator and being burned. 9 quarts, the car is over filled and you need to remove oil to get it down to a normal range. If the crank is hitting the oil, it can whip it up into a foamy mess and then the oil is not providing proper lubrication. Get it down to it normal maximum on the oil dipstick. This is my guess Dave

ive changed the oil with the amsoil 15w40 synthetic and the car is sounding much better and the gurgly sound is gone. The dipstick read overfilled so i know the guys at the quick lube put to much in. But it seemed to take a little while to read overfilled.
Anyway, the amsoil made all the difference in the sound and performance. At 3000rpms it sounds smoother then it did on shell rotella. But im still curious on where all the oil went on the long drive Maybe it will be an unsolved mystery until i take another trip with this car.
