Tom,

HINOs were dominant in the east of US, NY had plenty of them in mid size trucks, Isuzus too use HINO engines, as a matter of fact, I learnt about the attributes of HINO in NY only, they are as legendary as the OM616/617 in terms of reliability and longevity. Toyota's TLC diesels use HINO built engines as Toyota owns HINO who also now own Scania.

The company that builds HINO engine trucks is Ashok Leyland while the onel linked to MB is Force Motors, formerly known as Bajaj Tempo.

M35a2

M35A2 U.S. Army "Duece and a half" was the most powerful.

Loud, crude and with horrible brakes

A lot of fun though.

I was thinking in terms of torque/towing power, I suppose. I thought it was a turbo, but I'm probably wrong ... my mom wouldn't have had anything other than plain old stock. It was a big, hulking slow beast, not even in the same stratosphere as the 603 speedwise, but I guess I just always imagined it as having more towing power. We used to tow lots of stuff out to Michigan with it every year. Heck, for several years we used to pull the Benz out there, filling the Benz with crap as well as the back seats of the Suburban. I think we dragged everything we owned out there, LOL.

If I'm not mistaken the uss United States was steam turbine powered which is what gave that incredible speed. I believe the uss Independence is nuclear powered.

Probably the biggest, most powerful ship now is the latest 8k unit container ship whose name I have forgotten. It is about 1300 ft. long and has that 100k hp Wartsala engine that keeps showing up on this site.

I have a couple other friends who are avid EMD fans who would beg to differ with that comment about GE being the best. But I agree with you on their more modern models. And you can't beat that chest-pounding "GE chug" exhaust note! GE models from the 70's and early 80's were pretty bad when it came to reliability, but within the last 10 or 15 years they've really pulled up the quality with the Dash 9 series and the AC4400. And now the Evolution series has been pushing that standard even higher. Both of my "hogger" friends tell me that the ES44DC and ES44AC are two of the best locomotives they've operated since the venerable SD40-2 of the late 60's and 70's. Much quieter and smoother in the cab, very responsive engine compared to the slow-loading 7FDL, and great traction control computers. No wonder GE keeps pumping them out of the factory
The problem I have with the new EMD locomotives is the propultion system. The only have 2 inverters to power 6 traction motors. If you loose 1 inverter you loose 3 traction motors and that can stall a train. Almost all the trains out of here are coal at about 1.1 hp per ton (iirc) so when they have problems it really slows them down.
EMD engines are cool though with gear driven turbo's they spool up fast and almost no smoke if they run right.

Most powerful diesel I've driven, stock?

Have to be the W211 E320CDI I6. Haven't been fortunate enough to thrash a "Bluetec" around, yet.

IMHO, the I6 CDI sounds too quiet to me. Not enough soul, its a muted beast. Kind of like a muffled 617.

When I was nineteen I "drove" a Canadian Pacific locomotive while I was a hostler's helper traineee.

Very scary. One of my most favorite sounds ever is an idleing locomotive.

Fastest I've DRIVEN?
My '99 E300 turbo

Fastest I've BEEN IN?
W211 E400 CDI taxi in Vienna...6spd stickshift!!
The driver was speaking to my friend and I in German, translating what he had said into English for my friend's dad and another member of our group, watching the night's soccer world cup game on a little LCD TV he had mounted next to the nav system, and at the same time driving a stickshift twin-turbo V8 CDI roaring through traffic at what I'd estimate around 80mph!

We were lucky to make it back to the hotel alive because at those speeds I doubt even the W211's safety measures could save us! But man, what an awesome car it was...that CDI lit up with a growl and wouldn't stop roaring (he redlined every shift), and the sound of the turbos!!..I wish my E300 would make that sound.
MB is to blame for not importing such a great car.

A 350SDL with the boost line to the ALDA disconnected.

0-60 mph took about 35 - 40 seconds, and top speed was 68 mph in 3rd and 85 mph in 4th.

The entire time I accelerated, I laughed until I split my sides..

screeemer!!!

by far the fastest diesel I have ever driven in my life is A 1981 300d that I recently installed an engine from A 1984 300d turbo w/189K. I kind of eliminated some cumbersome vacum stuff one line connected to turbo at intake . Kind of runs hot too.even with new radiator?
