New bearings or not?
So I've got this engine that's going into a Land Rover. It's 617.952 out of a 123 body car. It's supposed to have about 175K on it though I have no way to confirm that. I've got the oil pan off as I've got to make some changes to it before it'll fit in the Rover and I'm thinking maybe I should throw a set of rod bearings at it.
Should I pull a cap and take a look? Should I just get a set of bearing and do it no matter what they look like? Looking for a little advice from the diesel crowd! I'm not really too concerned about the mains. Should I be? Thanks for your input. Jim |

i would plastigauge at least one rod and one main, i think. it wouldnt surprise me if you find the tolerances to be as new. we have gone through at least three mercedes one 280eand two 616 or 617 that showed no wear on the beaings at 175 to 275k miles and we simply put them back together.
but you dont really know if it was taken care of correctly without checking. if you find a lot of wear be sure to take a hard look at the timing chain and guides and the oil pump. with any care at all the bearings about can't be worn out. on the diesels with good care the timng chains don't wear either, but the guides do regardless of care. if it has been run with dirty oil the oil pump will wear too. but really good chance it is fine. it looks really clean. did you wash it? tom w

At least change out the rear main seal and the oil pump tensioner while it is down this far.

The original bearings are select fit from 3-4 different sizes..most replacements would be of the same size...so you might wind-up with too much OR little clearance...if the bearings show no signs of "brass" & the color is a dull Grey I would leave them alone....
Replace that upper half of the rear main seal while inspecting the bearings.
