83 300D Trans-Puzzler
Heres the scoop... Over the weekend, while I am in SoCal retrieving an 84 SD for parts, my son had a B2 piston break and no forward gears on his car. On Sunday I took it apart and checked to make sure, and I just happen to have an extra B2 here. So.. I changed out the part, and test drove the car with great success, works just like before. On Monday, he comes home and tells me it is messed up again. It suddenly started the trick of shifting through all the gears before reaching 20-25 Mph, plus doing the downshift thump like no vaccum to the modulator. I checked the moduator with my MighyVac and it looks normal, no leak, 15lbs or so with the drop in vac on throttle increase. I haven't climbed into it yet up to my elbows, but I am a little stumped on where to start my adventure. Any little bit of the great wisdom that often in this forum would be greatly appreciated. By the way, the 1-2 shift happens in the first 10 feet, and is bearly noticeable, the 2-3, and 3-4 happen rapidly afterwards. Four days ago this was a very excellent working transmission.....now.......

Have you checked the TV cable on top of the transmission?

Try installing a bolt in the floor under the pedal and maybe your son will quit slamming it into drive from N at high RPMs....

It does appear that you've lost the cable from the throttle linkage to the transmission. All the symptoms are those where there is no throttle pressure in the transmission to delay the shifts.
It's not a vacuum issue. |

I have never had to deal with the cable before. At the top, it appears to be intact because I operated it by hand and it had tension on it. Is there some way it could become disconnected from the trans on the bottom by the transmission where I cannot see it? I will check tomorrow while I am once again putting the whole thing back together after double checking my work.

This is just an update in case others have this issue with their transmission. After double, and somethings, triple checking like bowden cable, vacuum settings, fluid, filter, B2, vac. modulator, taking apart three times this week, it now works!. Today I checked everything again, then I replaced the valve body with one I removed from another 300d, and viola!! it shifts beautifully. I am not going to push my luck in thinking too hard on why....am just going to drive the cr#p out of it today before I return it to my son. Thank You for your comments on my problem, they always intice me to think and help with the situation. Bob
