Stripped Intake Manifold bolt heads

Hello all,

I'm currently removing the intake manifold from my 87 300D so that I can get to the glow plugs for replacement, adjust the ALDA, install injection line heaters, replace the injector fuel return lines, clean the inside of the intake manifold and cross over, and generally cleaning up and looking around.

Last night I stripped the allen head part of two of the intake manifold bolts. I'm planning on using easy outs to remove them. Any problems with that?

The real question is where do I find new intake manifold bolts? The nearest MB dealership is 40 miles away and I don't know where the nearest junk yard with MB's is at. Any ideas? I've got a call in to Phil, maybe he can help.

-Jim

I got a few at Ace Hardware last month - don't waste your time at Home Depot or the like.

Good to hear

I'm glad to hear that there is really nothing special about them. I'll give ace a try.

I learned from working on motorcycles to first clean out the allen head on the bolt first to make sure I get the best bite. Then if a bolt is stubborn, I spray it with penetrant and with the allen socket installed in the bolt, I wack the socket with a brass hammer to help break it loose.

Sounds like good advice. I'm sure I'll get a chance to use it in the future.

Thanks,

Jim

I would try cleaning that hole and try to get one last good grip.

I've had a couple to strip but were usually on the injection pump lines and had to use vise grips to remove the star bolts. Anyway, I would clean that allen hole real good and have me a good square and proper size allen wrench and tap with a hammer the socket head part of the allen wrench before I started drilling. You want to make certain that the tool fully seats in the bottom of the bolt.

I rounded the hex of one of these bolts. I ground off the head and used vice grips to pull the stud. I got a replacement bolt from the dealer but there's nothing special about it.

Thanks for the advice

I got the two stripped ones out with an easy out.

I missed one bolt all the way in the back. I almost jumped right in and tried to take it out. I stopped myself and rememberd your advice. I cleaned out the bolt head, put in the tool, tapped on the back with a hammer, attached the ratchet and it came out with no fuss. Thanks!
