I need a td-body from around '87 (wagon)
my '87 TD is on the verge of dying of bodycancer. engine very good. turbo whistles from 600 rpm... no smoke... fast! (6 cylinder engine)
anyone know a td (wagon) with bad engine/ trans for under $1000 and I'll come and get it. within a range of 800 miles of nashville TN that is. |

Does it have to be a TD? Will a TE body work or do you have emissions inspections to deal with?

If I did, I'd have bought it, rebuilt it, and ebay'd it. I agree, you're probably better off with a TE... plus you can get a much more updated interior.

Hate to sound the vulture but.... If you decide to sell the engine, I am a buyer provided the deal is in line. Let me know. Thanks

Using the body from a 300TE is definitely doable, but beware of the DMV! In many states, you are going to have a TOUGH time explaining to the DMV that you have a diesel engine in a former gas engine body. California, for example, do not need emission tests for diesels but required for gas engines. Well, the VIN plates and other IDs from your rusted body could mysteriously "moved" to the new body. That will save you a lot of headaches.

It's Illegal to Remove VIN# Plate
Quote:
10.7.51 of the California motor vehicle code: It is illegal to remove or alter the vin # of a motor vehicle.....Should an altered vin # be encountered (which includes method of attachment) at best the tag is seized, and a state tag will be placed on the vehicle in place of the original (that'll really help if you ever go to sell the car). Should the vehicle not have a secondary #, to authenticate its identity, the vehicle will be crushed. The CHP (California Highway Patrol) frequently checks the VIN# when they make a stop. If they see the VIN# plate has been tampered, and suspect that the vehicle is stolen, they could order it seized. I do not know whether other states are as strict, so do check it out the law before starting on the job. |

I can get a good TE body for $500... but I'd rather not do a wiring harness job too... too much work, too many 'computer'-units with those 6 cylinders. emissions is no problem here, nor is changing to diesel engine.
