Definitely replace the belt and check for bad accessories (AC, alternator, etc). When we crimped the chain tensioner seal on my brother's SDL, it shook like crazy, even "buzzed" the steering wheel until the oil worked off the belt. I personally think his rough idle problem was a slipping/grabbing belt -- symptoms nearly identical to yours.

Much cheaper than a new chain, although that helped too. If you have not, check the chain stretch (didn't read the entire thread again, my appologies if you have already done so!).

*had a major fuel leak, replaced fuel delivery o-rings, copper washers

Did this problem start shortly after this job, if so it could be related. I was thinking about this at work today, delivery valve seals will cause a rough idle. I'd sudjest re doing the job and making 110% sure they are torqued properly.

Next step at least for me would be to change the engine mounts. Other than a rough idle are there any other symptoms? Does it clear up if say you bring the rpms to 1k, in neutral?

Then I would move onto the injectors. I am lucky and have a great Bosch shop in my area, so at least for me pulling them and having them bench tested is no big deal.

I am not 606 expert but I do know a bit about them. I think the IP on the 606 is computer controlled to a point, I'd look to that system next.

Rough idle can also be caused by poor compression in one cylinder, but I say the chances of that being the case is 1% at most. The 606 is a tough motor, I have never heard of one losing compression.

Sorry for the delay, I ment to reply sooner but got a bit distracted.

Phil,

I had similar symptoms and eventually had the injector pump rebuilt about a year ago. The car is about 90% better. see this thread : idle problem 1998 e300 td please help

When the car is shaking in P or N, does the shaking stop if you turn on the A/C (make sure the EC button is not pressed)?

I still have the shake with the foot off the accelerator approching a redlight at low engine speed. Maybe a software issue?

90% better is an improvement but not a concrete answer...

allthumbs-

Per the several posts regarding this vibration/ shaking problem with 98-99 e300 turbodiesels, i count the following members with the same/ similar reported problems:
*92497pmu
*allthumbs
*d-zel
*crmont (maybe, maybe just fuel leaks)

I'd like to know with more confidence a IP rebuild will fix the problem and why? For $1500++ they should be damn sure of the repair. Also, to quote your last reply, it sounds like you still have the vib/ shake before shifting to R or D and somewhat when slowing to a stop. I have the same issues this morning when I left the house.

However, the car ran great after my lunch appointments at mid-day when it warmed up to 58F (damn, it's getting cold here).

I didn't get a chance to do the belt removal over the weekend (office stuff and some fall bird hunting). I'll post some results after the belt/ pulley test later.

Oh... and BTW, 90% isn't really fixed per my standards. Better, maybe- but not 100%

Barely. The computer runs the rack position and the shut-off diverter valve. Otherwise, it's very like the older pumps.

Don't forget the poor old lift pump. My '95 had all kinds of weird symptoms which were cleared after replacing this pump. Main problem was stalling several minutes after starting normally. Cheap and easy to replace.

More bad news...

its leaking something again

NO leaks for almost 2 wks, now i find a puddle under the car this AM.
It's pouring buckets here in NY for the next 3-4 days, so no way to even check whats leaking now.

This kind of reads like a diary from a failed expedition Antartic mission...getting very frusterated...

Don't worry about the rough idle until all leaks are resloved.

Check your recently repalced delivery valves for fuel leaks and then the bottom of the shutoff valve (it has a o-ring seal to the IP).

Has the pre-filter o-ring been replaced recently?

Should be easy to find if it is making a puddle on the floor.

!@$$ leaks & o rings

..pardon my language to the guy who was complaining about expletives in some post the other day.

I just bought a pre-filter o-ring @ the dealer when I got the fuel line Phil forgot to ship.
Lost it.... damn.

I might end up over @ mcmaster online to find the viton option rings if possible. Does anyone have the dimensions for the pre-filter o-ring? Any comment on the OM606 lift pump? Does the 606 have a lift pump or is this just for the old-school guys?

bump...

symptoms: vibration, rough idle, fuel leak, sluggish acceleration- 1998 e300

Does anyone have the dimensions for the pre-filter o-ring?
Does anyone have dims for the o-ring for the bolt (under intake manifold) that goes from the fuel filter to the IP?

Thanks in advance.

NVH problems solved

nagging problem of rough idle, excessive noise, vibration at idle - solved last month by a local independent mechanic.

Johnny Everett replaced my motor mounts (worn or broken, not really sure) and the benz runs great now. I guess there is a TSB for this and he had another MB in the shop recently with the same problem.

About $400 total for all parts and labor. Not bad considering it was pouring rain outside and nice and dry in his shop. He handed me the keys and was nearly giddy - "you won't even recognize your old car" he said.

I actually had to look at the tach to see that it had started - it ran so much better now! Actually a pleasure to drive again & just paid off as well!!
