300SD Always Turbo?

Newbie alert....

Is a 1980 300SD a W116? Also, is it always a Turbo or was that an option?

The charity where I work is getting one as a donation, and I'm trying to learn enough that we don't lose out by sending it to dealer auction if it needs to be sold at a collector's site to get the best return.

Any advice regarding resale (where, if inspection is needed, etc) or what to look for would be welcome.

Yes, it's a turbo, all the US W116 300SD models were turbo equipped in 1980.

It ought to be checked out to be sure it is safe before it is sold. Disclosure of all faults is a good idea, but it should be sold "as is"

Where are you located? I might be interested if it's in good condition and a worthwhile cause....

We're in Arizona.

We haven't received the vehicle yet, but I was trying to find out more about the vehicle and the demand so we could set a reasonable asking price -- I didn't realize you allow sales on this board, too. I was thinking of going through eBay or Autotrade.com

We're told it runs and the body/glass/tires are all 'in good shape' but of course you never really know till you see it.

NADA lists a low value at $4500 and I've seen them run about that on eBay.

You could try posting it for sale in the "cars" section of the classifieds too when you are ready to sell it.

That's a good idea, though I'm not sure what the market is, locally. Of course, we've got to figure out a fair price, first. There is a Mercedes shop here that usually charges $100 for an inspection -- would they be a good resource for figuring out resale value?

Usually the buyer is the one that would pay for the vehicle inspection to make sure that the car is in good shape mechanically. Try posting some pictures and a description of the car when you get it. I'm sure the forum members will help you decide what it is worth.

All 300SD ever made are turbo independently of body style.
Unless pristine that car is not worth $4500.
Having bought most of my cars in Tucson, i can tell you that the car WILL have a cracked dash, WILL need a new battery and new tires very soon unless they were both changed just before the sale.
Rubber parts, Air filters and oil changes are also items on the priority list when you live in the Sonoran Desert.

So from a base price of $3500 for a less than 200k AND absolutely no rust (which is the Forte of Tucson cars) car you can knock 1000 bucks if the AC does not work properly. And because that car is equipped with the dreaded Chrysler ACCII system it is almost a certainty that the AC does not work.
You can knock 500 bucks if the car has more than 200K and did not have the timing chain replaced.

So in 99% of the cases, you are contemplating at a 2000-3500$ if nothing else is too bad.
