Pinging/Ratteling noise on the 96 E300
OK guys I have tried to find this noise for a while with no luck. At speeds above 40 mph or 30 mph under heavy acceleration I get what almost sounds like a heavy pinging noise from the engine compartment. it only does it under a load I can sit in the driveway and race the motor and it willnot make a sound. At first I was thinking and injector since they have 300K plus miles on themhowever perfomance is spot on so I am not sure. Can the timing chain make a similar noise under load if it has sinificant wear? The sound is similar in resonance with RPM but it does not rise and fall with engine
RPM it will go away if I let off of the accelerator or on the down side of an over pass while on cruise. Anybody have any ideas???????

no idea if it's the same - but mine used to have a minor rattle or ping between 72-76 mph when under moderate load (no load or high load - I couldn't hear it) like just starting to go up a moderate hill. I never could find the problem, but I changed to a heavier synthetic oil and it seems to have gone away. I now run Amzoil 15w-40 Heavy Duty Synthetic Diesel oil, always used Mobil1 in the past...
