i am not an expert on york comp. but i think it is a two cylinder jobbie. has pistons rods and a crankshaft pretty much like an engine. so i believe you can add oil to the crankcase. i would take the plug loose carefully and if it starts hissing tighten it up right away.

and go to plan b. ask some one who actually knows.

Inlet and outlet on an early York should have shut off valves ( Roto locks. Service valves) for hi and low side on top of the compressor....
After you close off the system from the compressor you can slowly release the oil filler plug and let out small amount of freon from crank case.....add your oil and close it up...( total oil fill 6 to 10 oz depending on model .).open roto valves again....the oil level depends on the compressor fitted.

The single cylinder York is what it looks like....a twin cylinder looks like a little vee twin. (w/RV2.) at least, that's what it looks like.
I had a vee type on my old 1986 Dodge b200 van. Used up huge amounts of power. !

Found this.........http://www.heco.net/Compressors.pdf

Actually...all these years I though the York square compressor was a single cylinder....but it's actually two...so what was the Dodge vee compressor then?...Can't find any info in it.

Here's overhaul proceedures on a square ....really detailed.... . http://www.ccicompressor.com/docs/CCIsrvice.pdf

A buddy who does hvac work had one of those v twin Dodge comp on his van. The van had been purchased used by his skinflint boss. Buddy turns on a/c and a clogged a/c line causes entire rear of comp to fly backwards as it explodes. Thankfully, no one was hurt. A trip to autozoo and a six pack later he had cold a/c in the work van.

NO, you cannot add while charged. If you feel you need oil, you can buy OIL CHARGE cans that have 2 to 4 oz of oil and a small amount of freon.

No, and no no...........don't use those if it says it has leak sealer in it.
Most all that crap is made by Interdynamics.....I won't work on ANY a/c system in my shop with that stuff in it.

The York compressor has an internal oil sump and uses splash lubrication to distribute the oil to the working parts of the compressor. As I recall NO mineral oil was supposed to be added to the refrigerant in these systems. I'd check the shop manual before I added ANY mineral oil to the refrigerant in a York A/C compressor system.

wow!

i am amazed at the diversity of the answers. better find a york manual.

there are a couple of places offering brackets to mount a sanden compressor in place of the york. i dont know how much work the other things like hoses and wires will cause. vintage air is one.

ooops, My bad - full credit to dkveuro for the service manual.

I don't have fond memories of the York A/C compressor, lived with them in my 220D and early W123 240D days. As I recall I replaced 2-3 of them over a 8 year period. I can vividly remember a trip on the Pennsylvania turnpike when a rod broke in the compressor - blew a hole right through the side of the compressor and there was oil everywhere.

Seems like the A6 and R4 compressors were a big and improvement and the newer Nippondenso compressors are even better. My daily driver (91 300D) now has 202K miles on it's original Nippondenso compressor - the A/C still blows ice cold after 1.5 decades of service.

Question!

I still have a working York, and some cans of R12...where the hell is the "oil filler" forthis compressor, and how do I fill it without having all the old Freon shoot out everywhere? Help
