You sure that's 5W-40 you're seeing? I see Mobil 1 Truck and SUV oil at Wal-Mart all the time, but it's in the new 5W-30 weight. The bottles are nearly identical.

As for the comments from those using Shell Rotella Synthetic 5W-40 in the blue bottle, since I can't find Mobil 1 5W-40 Turbodiesel oil, I'm using the Shell as well. But, the MBCA technical advisor told me the Shell Rotella Synthetic is not approved by MB and is "mediocre". I hardly think running a non MB approved oil for 5K miles will damage the engine. I know owners who ran xW-30 oils in their MB diesels for years until they found out about proper xW-40 and xW-50 oils, and the engines performed fine, probably due to the fact that they changed "hot and often". Nevertheless, they did switch to motor oils with proper weights in the end.

I looked at the M1 Turbodiesel oil and it meets spec for 228.5 whereas there are some specs for 229.5. Is that going to be a problem?

That's good info, I keep hoping the M1 will show up soon in my area. If not, maybe I'll just mail-order a few gallons of D1. I'm running the Rotella "Synthetic" now, but I'll be due for another oil change by the time I get my 300D home next week. You're probably correct, the Shell shouldn't do much harm in 5K miles.

Craig since you do so much driving you might want to consider a bulk purchase of D1. I have seen die hard Amsoil fans with 55 gallon drums of the stuff in their garage. Figure a 55 gallon drum is good for about 27-29 oil changes.

Buying in bulk is usualy a lot cheaper...

I have good luck with Empire Oil for Mobil Delvac 1 15w-40. I am able to get 450 miles per tank on the highway with no ac out of my '87 300D 603. The difference between Super 1300 and the Delvac 1 was amazing. Dead stop acceleration and mid range power improved dramatically. I will never go back to dino.

www.empireoil.com Paid around $100 per case (4 gal) plus $15 for shipping. Well worth not having to get on LA freeways. Had it the next day on my doorstep.

That's interesting, I've never considered buying 140K worth of oil all at once. I wonder what the price per quart would be. Maybe I should make some calls. Of course, I would have to explane to my wife why I'm spending $1000 on oil.

Also explain to her where you are going to store it and all that. Show her how much the savings are. Hope you have a tent and sleeping bag.

LOL, one 55 gallon drum would take up a lot less space than my other worthless junk in the garage, like spare parts for cars I owned 20 years ago.

Just don't ask her about the 914 that's been sitting around for the last 15 years waiting for me to get around to putting it back together, bad subject.

My bad on the Delvac 1 15w-40. It is actually 5w-40. The new "MX" family of Delvac oils has a 15w-40. The bulk oil idea would great if you could split it with a few buddies. The problem is getting them to "buy" in and also come up with a 20 gallon storage tank, which might be impractical for some people.

You might be surprised, I'd crunch the numbers. Its not what it costs right now, its what it costs over said 140k miles. Long term hidden costs are easy to deal with now, but what get you eventualy. I don't drive enough to even consider this, but by the amount you seem to drive it may make sense.
