intermittent power window problem?

1985 300D. Bought it two weeks ago at auction for $1500. Everything works (don't know about antenna as radio/speakers are missing - it was a police impound). Anyway, put driver's rear window down yesterday and it wouldn't go back up. I tried both console and door switches. No motor noise. I tried gently but 'deliberately' 'tapping' the door's metal case thinking it might be a struck motor but no dice. So I left it down overnight and today. Tonight in the garage, just for grins, I turned on the ignition and tried the console switch again. Nothing. Then I lowered and raised all 3 other windows from the console switches. The I tried the rear door switch again and BINGO, it went up, where it will stay until I can figure out why. It did appear to go up somewhat slow but that could be my imagination, or maybe a track in need of lube or a tired motor?

Hypotheses?

Possibility of a marginal fuse connection? When you open the fuse box, check to see if the fuses are the cheapo aluminum ones or copper. There have been many "ghost" problems from mild corrosion caused by disimilar metals in the fuse box.

If it's not the fuse, maybe the wires to the motor are a little loose. I haven't had to fiddle with the windows on my car yet, but just the other day a friend with a Dodge Caravan had the same problem and the wire was loose where it connected to the motor.

Or, maybe it could be the switch. It wouldn't be my first guess, but when I got my car the switches all had wet sand in them. In my case things just stopped working (shorted the fuses, I think), but I would imagine intermittency could be possible.

Also, if you take the wood panneling around the shifter off and have trouble getting it to stay in place when you put it back, no one will ever know if you use some $1.49 velcro.

Pepsi syndrome!!!

The switches probably are gipped up from someone spilling sodas on the window switches. Because of no cup holders, people would set drinks on the center console. I have taken MANY apart and cleaned out gummy soda from the contacts in the switches. They can be taken apart if you are careful.

3rd vote for switches

I had a problem with my sunroof working sometimes and sometimes not. Checked everything and then grabbed the switch out of another 300D and it worked right away so do the easy thing and check that first.

If i'm not mistaken the front right and left rear windows are on the same fuse, so if one isn't working then the other shouldn't either(if it's the fuse). This also goes for the front switches, If one switch up front stops working then so does the one on the opposite side in the rear.(so in another words forget about your fuse's and start investigating the wiring to the rear door). If you manage to figure this out can you post how you got it fixed.I believe i'm having the same problem.
