and here it sets at 230k. What the hell do I need to do to fix this? I'm trying to restore this Benz and the dumb@$$ former owner let it sit in the yard for so long that every little thing possible is breaking >=(

It happens alot...search on "odometer" and you'll find a lot.

Look in the DIY section for an explanation with pictures.

There are also places out there that will fix, tune, and clean yours up for you. I had the same problem about a year ago and I tried to fix it myself, but came to the conclusion that there were too many little parts in there that I didnt' want to screw up. So I sent it to a speedo shop in Portland, OR, and now it works like a champ. But definetly look into yours yourself. It might be an easy fix.

DieselGiants write up was very easy to follow. FWIW, theres a place around Austin TX that can turn it around for you, but DieselGIants page is easy and costs a fraction of the cost of a speedometer shop.

This forum is filling with bad advice in the name of commercialism.

Diesel giant took the long way around the barn, but made a pretty presentation of it. Anyone who makes odometer repair that much trouble should send it to a shop and make websites for a living. You can easily find a better way to fix your odometer here if you search. I would not put locktite in my speedometer either.

I dunno, I've put super glue in 3 of them, and they all worked fine. Now of course, I wouldn't just spray it around in there.....

Why take the chance on locktite when you don't need it? Eliminating non-essentials and possible complications is an approach often used in problem solving.

This is a repost of a repost of a repost...

Also the distinction between odometers in different models is a primary consideration.

Ahhh I dont know let the people who have done the repair be the judge on it. Using locktite on the odometer is not a bad thing. The fix has worked for many so something is going right. Why take it to a shop and pay $80 when you can do it yourself for a few $$.

Does anybody agree with that or am I some crazy nut?

Different strokes for different folks. Personally I didn't feel comfortable playing with all those little gears. I didn't want to break things more than they already were. It's one of the few thing I let someone else do on my car since I bought it.

Locktite seems to have worked for a lot of folks here.

Why put locktite on it when you don't need to? It may cause a problem and it serves no useful purpose.

Why remove the shaft and tape numbers when you don't need to? Push the shaft through with a drill bit far enough to score the shaft with a pair of diagonal cutters, done.

Tape numbers? and remove? Why?

Read the diesel giant pictorial, read the thread in the link and fix your odometer the easy way.

Just "Renewed" the instrument panel, lights and gauges and odometer

Once again, be aware that different models have different odometers.

I do commend diesel giant for having a nice web pictorial for free, others charge for access to their site or for a CD with the same information.
