Yeah that would be the driver of the MB who was tailgating and not paying attention to stop in time. Another MB dies from unskilled driving , I fully agree on what the key to this equation was.

The overlap in that crash looks intense! Maybe 20% frontal, or even less.

That was a seriously dangerous, and structurally challenging crash. And to happen with a truck.... Jeez!

Whoa, whoa there! I was referring to the truck driver who turned in front of the Mercedes, not the driver of the Mercedes. Please re-read post #1.
I took that to mean turned in front from the opposite direction. Most of the time, when they turn in front going the same direction, the damage is on the passenger side.
Such venom from the youngsters lately.....

banshee350,

I'm sorry for your loss.

I see your in SW washington. Where is the corpse going to be interred? I might like to harvest the turbocharger.

If you're parting it out, I would like the vacuum pump if it is not damaged. I did send you an e-mail about it. Thanks.

The accident was caused by the guy driving the truck making a quick left turn, which means the MB was following the truck (way too close) and had 0 time to react and slow down or try to stop. Had he been following with another car length or two of room he'd have probably never even hit the truck and had time to let those excellent MB brakes save the car or allow the injury to be very minor. Verdict: typical following too close to the car in front resulting in accident

I could have had the same thing happen a few months ago, I was going about 58mph on a beltline road around here, two lanes of 55mph traffic. Guy up in front of me suddendly decides he wants to merge left into a turn around AS he's passing it, so he's plowing on the brakes IN HIS LANE instead of moving over as he does it, so I had to come from 58mph to 0mph in around 60-70 feet tops, I latched the brakes, and stopped almost 15 feet from the guy, and I even locked up the front wheels in the last 3-4 feet of the stop or so, it layed a patch . Van behind me swerved over because they couldn't stop fast enough, had they not, I'd have still been rearended, but it all came out fine. I was lucky, but I was also about 8-9 car lengths behind the guy, giving me lots of room to react and stop, saving my car. MB have excellent brakes, allowing enough time/space to have a chance to use them is imperative. Case closed.

Sad. Hope all are still doing well and have not suffered more pain afterwards, as is normal.

Question, if that is what the 350SDL looks like, what happened to the Chevy?

I guess Banshee350 could clear this up, but my guess is still that an on-coming truck turned left in front of them, causing the accident. That is certainly the more common of the two scenarios. If it happened the other way, then your assessment is accurate, albeit laced with attitude....

we should not be judgmental of other folks accidents.

they could happen to us too... that is why they are called accidents.

i am pretty sure from the pics and what was said the this was a head on collision. NOT from our member tailgating. i just looked again. at 35 mph the only possible way for that much damage is a head on. think about it. cars going different directions. truck turns left into left front of our mb. left front mashed about as bad as i have seen. no way to react. a totally illogical move on the part of the truck. prob talking on a cell phone....my guess.

lets play together nicely please.

this is supposed to be fun!

Ok ok if it was a frontal accident then I drop all charges on the driver of the MB, as there was probably no way to avoid it. I am glad the safety cage feature worked so well, it proves just how safe these cars are in those kinds of accidents, where in many many other vehicles the person could be severely injured or killed.

Twice in the past two weeks I have been going across this freeway interchange around here, and someone on a cell phone has come from the opposing side of traffic, when the only green lights are the arrows for the two opposite sides to turn to go on the freeway ramp. I held my horn both times, one guy just kept going (went from stopped at a red light to running it) and another woman slowed, realized what she was doing and stopped very quickly. BOTH were on cell phones. Ill keep tabs on how many more times it happens. People need to learn to drive. Sigh.

Well, that's refreshing that you place yourself with every other rocket scientist on the road with a justification on how they can talk and drive at the same time.

You are in a complex situation the moment you move the shift lever out of Park.

How so? It was hit on the driver side not passenger side. Also, I'd say the driver side has one more thing to worry about since it has the steering wheel that doesn't look good as a chest ornament or necklace.
