Oil Pan Woes...

Anyone here ever replaced/repaired the oilpan on a 603? Thing One just bashed Sybill's oilpan into something as he was parking and it's now leaking like a sieve....AAA has been called and the beast is getting hauled home as we speak.

Arrrgh!!!!!

I guess one thing to be thankful of is the type of rear main seal that engine has versus the packing.

although some here have changed pans wo pulling the engine, you have to jack it up really high to do so. i would be leery of damaging lines and wires. conventional wisdom is that it is an engine out task.

sorry.

jb weld

in my youth - i bottomed out an 81 300D and cracked the oilpan - i cleaned it after draining it (didnt remove it) and used jb weld to seal it - it held well afterwards and never leaked. cost $4.

Any chance of insurance company repairing it without raising premiums? Or like myself you have no comprehensive or collision on these cars? I can almost visulise that rock falling off the dumptruck ahead of me with no visible licence plate.

I wouldn't discount this at all. Some years ago (28 ) I repaired a cracked waterjacket on a chevy 235 with marinetex - great stuff, and nowadays they have a high strength version. As you know, 95% of that job and it's success is surface prep.

Good news/bad news

First of all, this could have happened to anybody. It had absolutely nothing to do with Thing One's driving skills.

After the fun with AAA, last night we had Sybill towed to the house and cleaned the damaged area of the oilpan, exposing the fractured front right corner of the sump. Removing the sump extention, allowed us to examine the inside of the pan for loose pieces and to determine the extent of damage too. ...considering that it is a major undertaking to remove the pan, I elected to check in with a long time friend and welder fantastique, Jim Van Krennigen, who has a heliarc shop here in River City to see if he could weld the cracks shut in-situ. I took some digital pics and was a Jim's shop bright and early this am...after a review and discussion, the good news is that he can fix it (well actually, his right hand man, Jesus will be doing the work) without removing the pan. The bad news is that there won't be room in his shop until the week of the 14th.

So, she sits until then.

Let this be a warning to anyone with a 603: watch out for tall curbs in parking lots... the oil sump on the 603 engine sticks out like Dudley DoRight's chin, just asking for a bump (it was obvious that this wasnt the first curb it has touched too). It is a stupid design and IMHO, is simply another example of how engineering and longevity have taken a back seat at DB since the end of the W123's run.

ROFLMAO! You're a riot!

This car cost me $650 and comprehensive premiums are something like $1000/yr.
