617 Motor Has Vacuum On Valve Vover

OPENING whith oil cap off. take off oil cap ,no blowby, put hand over oil cap opening and there is a strong vacuum at idle from oil cap opening
78 300CD NON TURBO
Problem is when i park oil leaks from drain hole in filter housing, dry air filter, not wet bath.Leaves a 6 inch puddle and soaks air filter
Motor has great smooth idle, does 90mph no problem, and has about 150k miles. Does not smoke excessivly, almost no smoke. no oil line leals,no seal leaks

Thanks
Rich

your om617 could have more than 150k on it.. have you had a carfax ran on it.. the odometers are known to fail. any valve adjustment lately? all oil cooler lines tight to spec, same with oil filter housing and gaskets..

to find where the oil is coming from degreases the engine extensively.. it will help. i thought my oil pan was leaking .. i degreased.. nopre just a pinched wire on the valve cover gasket..

The only leak is from the two small holes in the air cleaner housing, I put tape on them temporary, only to have oil running out of air filter snorkle. The motor has no other leaks than what is comming from inside the intake to air filter. When i checked for blowby there was no pressure comming out of the valve cover, filler cap hole, but there was a STRONG VACUUM when i put my hand over the oil cap hole.where the oil cap goes.
IT IS LIKE THE OIL IS BEING VACUUMED OUT OF VALVE COVER INTO AIR CLEANER HOUSING .Why does the motor have a vacuum inside valve cover
opening at idle. Sorry this problem has me pulling out my last few good hairs.
Thanks
Rich

Very strange, I've never heard of that problem before. The only source of vacuum on these engines is the vacuum pump AFAIK. I don't have a clue what would cause a crankcase vacuum. Please let us know when you get to the bottom of it.

Make sure there are no leaves or anything stuck in the air filter "snorkel".

Though Problem-easy Fix-feel Dumb

Air filter had oil on it,but did not want to replace it till oil in air filter hosing problem was fixed.Did not want to buy a new air filter every two days.
On this non turbo 617 there is no oil drain back to pan.only one breather hose from top of valve cover to intake, under air filter.
Well when air filter is PLUGGED enough AIR IS DRAWN THROUGH BREATHER HOSE CAUSING VACUUM IN MOTOR.DUHH
Of well live and learn
Oil on filter was there ,maybe, because valve were way tight.
Good news now, car runs great,no blow-by and no VACUUM in valve cover and 2.5 degrees of chain stretch
AMEN
Rich

Well, just when i thouht it was fixed

After thinking oil leak in air filter was fixed ,i found that the vacuum pump hose that goes to air filter was pushing oil . Lucky the line was not inside air filter anymore. Took it out of air filter after reading about runaway motors from just this problem. motor running on it's own oil.Had the hose under filter housing with a rag around it.
So now i need to repair vacuum pump,i think, just not sure which part of pump to repair.Does have vacuum.Every thing works.
Anyone know how to fix this on a single diaphram pump?
Thanks
Rich
