Other IDI engines?

Whats the deal w/ indirect injection engines? Seems like they are in a minority... can anyone list some other IDIs that are still being made or made within the last decade?

Are the new benz diesels still indirect inject?

Is the Kubota D950 in my boat IDI or DI?

I understand how they work, but it seems that a DI engine is a superior design.

Any thoughts?

Popular IDI engines:

6.9/7.3 International (replaced by the direct injected 7.3 Powerstroke in '94)

6.2/6.5 Detroit (GM) Diesel. Still made in small numbers for use in the Humvee. The 350 Olds diesel was the ancestor of this engine, and was also IDI.

I'm not sure, but I think the 3208 Cat (last made around 1990) was IDI.

Most if not all diesels in current production are now direct injected. Indirect injection was popular for a while because they tend to be quieter and because the fuel injection pressure can be lower and still work properly. They were phased out due to inferior emissions, efficiency, and power, and because manufacturers started figuring out how to make a direct injection diesel quieter.

I don't know about your Kubota.

I think NOx emissions are killing the IDI diesels off. With advances in injector technology it may be cheaper/easier to build DI diesel as well.

Thanks for the replies.

I had the suspicion that prechambers had disappeared from the modern diesel.

Is benz using DI engines now and if so when did they switch?
