torque converter noise
1982 300sd mercedes benz turbo diesel
looking for help on what causes noise coming from the t/c and what will leak around the t/c housing if the plug is not leaking. Sound started out as a clicking noise. But now it a high rattling noise with the car just idling. When you speed up the engine the sound some what quieten down, soon as the you lower the acceleration the noise come right back to the high rattling noise right in the area of the t/c. Now noise starts as soon as the car is cranked and not drivable, noise too loud and atf fluid leaking too bad. Last edited by bigbenz40; 04-16-2006 at 01:35 PM. |

I think you should post a beter description of the noise. A cracked or broken fleplate for example makes one kind of noise. An internal fault in the torque converter makes another. As for the leakage there are quite a few people on this site that have lots of experience with mercedes in this area and they will respond. I am not one of them other than thinking a better description of the noise should be posted and mention if drivability is being affected in any way.

flex plate
Where and how do you check the flex plate?
Is flex plate same as flex disc. |

Thanks for increasing your description of the noise it really helps. The flexplate bolts to the rear of the crankshaft and it is like a flywheel. (not quite) Your torque converter bolts to it. Some inspection is possible from under the car. There should be a cover you can remove. You rotate the flexplate to inspect each bolt and try to look for cracks. Not uncommon to have loose bolts from the flex plate to converter or cracks in the flexplate. Again my knowledge on mercedes is very limited. Archives under flexplate or even torque converter might help you more. If you can safely get under the car ideling in neutral you just might locate the exact source of the noise as well.
Emergency brake and blocked wheels as safety is first. Also since you are leaking fluid. The back of the torque converter has a coupling that slides into the transmission. If the oil is red you might be looking for a problem in that area. You might be faced with pulling the tramsmission. But again do check the archives and wait for others to respond.
