A/C hoses - o-ring lubricating oil

Taking a break from sunroof work until some parts arrive...

Picked up some new AC hoses today from AC shop and I had one question: I don't have any nylog, what type of oil should I use to lubricate the o-rings with? Manual just says "cold flowing oil"?? I am keeping it R-12 and was probably going to use mineral oil - any suggestions?

Ryan

After doing my AC last year and using Nylog, I had no leaks when finished. One of my connections was loose and still had no freon leak. IMO, I wouldn't start the job without Nylog.

Is nylog available at any local, chain stores? If I could find it locally, I would probably use it, but I haven't been able to track it down.

The R-12 systems used Buna O-rings, which are black ...... They should be replaced with either highly saturated nitrile (HSN) O-rings (Green), or neoprene O-rings ( Blue). Both of these replacement O-rings are compatible with either R-12 or R-134a refrigerants.

Use system lubricating oil to oil O-rings pre assembly.
So your Green O-rings should be fine.

Thanks dkveuro,

System oil meaning mineral oil, right? Just making sure... Do I need to get any particular type mineral oil - for automotive/refrigerant application?

I should explain - I'm just putting my system back together - a mechanic friend of mine is going to then pressure test, rehcarge with R12.

Again, thanks for the help.

You can get Nylog here:
http://www.ackits.com/merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=AMA&Product_Code=RT200R

Do NOT use any Mineral oil other than specific AC Oil. Regular off the shelf contains too much wax and will clog your system.

You can use AC Oil to lube your O-rings but Nylog is better.

The origonal oil was a mineral product which is what you will use as a charge in the system...Did you totally drain the oil from the system ?......if not, there is a high probability you will over charge the oil quantity....which is a common problem and reduces the cooling ability/capacity of the system.

You must be sure you only use the oil quantity the system calls for.
System oil for R12 is a mineral oil S.U.S.500 viscosity.

You can get it at most auto parts stores.
There are also oils that are compatable for both R12 and R134a freons.

Google result....."............NYLOG BLUE is compatible with all Refrigerants
Use on all Flare or Tapered Pipe Fittings and as a Gasket or O-ring Sealant.
Excellent for sealing Schrader valve cores.
Will not contaminate, clog, restrict or cause any system fouling or failure.

NYLOG renders a strong, flexible, lubricative glaze that prevents high pressure leakage through
refrigeration gaskets and threaded fittings.
NYLOG never hardens and always
remains temperature and vibration resilient.

NYLOG BLUE is fully miscible with all refrigeration fluids and can be used for high tack lubrication on internal compressor parts, system valves,
seals and much more.

Since Nylog is a Refrigeration fluid (oil), all sealed system parts can be pre-lubricated. Typical uses include coating of pistons, cylinders, rods, rings and valves. Refrigerant leakage is greatly reduced when shaft seals are coated with Nylog.
Coated Schrader valve cores do not leak and their depressors remain lubricated.
Pre-lubed solenoids, actuators, unloaders or ball valves are prevented from binding. "

That's hard to tell. Try going to some of your local retailers websites and search for Nylog.

True, you need special non-wax mineral oil for the system, but do you truly imagine problems from the thin coat of oil on an O-ring?

This Nylog oil sounds like a needless fuss. These O-rings don't move. All you need is an initial compression of the rubber to seal. The oil helps it slide into position initially. I might be missing some concept, but I do have an M.S. in mechanical engineering.
