Speedo cable: 1980 240D manual trans swap problem.
After 3+ years off the road, my 240 is back on the road after a restoration, and a 4 speed transmission swap. Unfortunately I cannot get the speedo cable to work.
The cable is fine, but the receiver in the manual tranny is different from the auto one. It looks like the cable is about 1/2 an inch short of engaging in the trans. I assume I must have lost an insert of some sort. I did drop by the dealership and looked at their exploded parts lists but we could not id the part. I can confirm that the cable used with the auto has a different end where it mates with the tranny, so I am using the cable that came with the manual, it just seems to short. The tranny is from a 1984 240D. Can anyone shed some light on what part I am missing? In addition please confirm that the cable end with the attached round collar is the speedo head end. Thanks, John

I'm replacing the speedo cable in my '81 240d with a 4 speed and find the replacement cable a bit too long - by about 1/2 an inch - so I guess there is a different cable for the 4speed? Looks like the flip-side of the OP message. Any ideas, anybody?

WOW, that is a beautiful 240. I remember seeing the gallery pictures last yr. and the work you were doing.
I don`t know if this is any help or not. I swapped in a 4-spd into my 85 300D. I used the same spedo cable that went into the automatic trans. has the little square end. I wonder if the cable for the 5 cyl is longer because of one more cyl and a longer transmission with the auto? I don`t remember any insert. just remove the 10mm bolt and pulled out the cable and or reinserted it. Charlie In All Parts Express they show 80 thru 83 240D show 3 cables mbz 013136 m/t 1420mm mbz 013128 m/t 1310mm mbz 013133 a/t 1390mm 85 300D mbz 13137 a/t 1460mm

When I did the 4spd conversion on my '81 300CD I had to use the 240D speedo cable. The two cables were different at the transmission-end, one was square and the other rectangular.

Looking at the pictures of the cables in the part catalog, mbz 013136 has the small end
0113128 & 013133 have the larger flat end. Click on the picture to enlarge. ![]() ![]() ![]() this last one I used in my 4-spd swap in the 85 mbz 13137 ![]() Charlie
