Phil, this some nice info. I have a few cheapo wrenches I bought to try this on. BTW, is that some of that plastic-dip stuff covering the wrench handles?

No plastic dip. I figure I'm not using them often enough to coat the handles so I just spray painted them. The other wrench I should do some more grinding on so it would look better but thats when a lot of other stuff is finished. I cut about 1/4 of an inch off a 30mm socket and used that. By the way The total cost was no more than $10, so cheep wrenches work just fine.

Phil, thanks for the info! QUESTIONS...

1. what is the 30mm socket used for?

2. how big is the gap/slot you cut into it?

3. did you also cut down the length of the socket?

4. Did you grind/thin down the 14mm wrench heads? How much?

newbie question, but I wiil be doing this job next week, so now is the time to ask!

Thanks.

What is the procedure for bending? Did you use heat? How much? Do you need a sledge hammer or will a regular hammer work? Total cost $10??? Where did you buy them from?

1) The wrench made with the cut off part of the socket is used to hold the valve spring retainer. I only needed it on two of the valves.

2,3) I made the wrench before I took the valve cover off on my car so I guessed on the size of opening but I would say its about 2/3 the size of the socket. The entire wrench is only about 3/8 of an inch thick. I cut off 1/4 inch of the end of the socket and welded that to 1/8 inch flat stock then cut a hole in the center with a hole saw then cut out the end and ground it till I was satisfied with it.

4) I didn't need to grind down the 14mm wrench heads but that seems to vary with the brand of wrench.

The 14mm wrenches I heated with an oxy / acetylene torch then bent them. With that much heat you can bend them easily.

The wrench made from a 30mm socket is not bent.

I bought the wrenches that I started with from Napa Auto Parts.

a propane tourch with map gas works just as good for bending wrenches

I have adjusted the valves quite a few times on 617 engines. I never needed any special wrenches but I did grind an original MB Dowidat wrench to make it narrower so it fit in easier.

Phil,

That's what is stamped on MB wrenches in the original tool kit. Maybe I spelled it wrong.

I think it's Dowiat. I remember that name was on some of the tools for my old 200D.
