Thumbs down Ct.DMV diesel emissions testing questions

Hi out there,
My elderly mother has a 1985 MB 300d that runs EXCELLENT and CLEAN...She adds Redline dfc.
The 300d has failed the da*n state of Ct. opacity test 2 times.
Can anyone out there in diesel land chime in with ACCURATE KNOWLEDGE of the ramifications of this situation?
She states that after the first test she was "given" (probably SOLD) some bottle of additive. This REDUCED the failure by "5 Points".
Speak to me
Best wishes always,
spo out
Perhaps a tankful of B20?

Make sure it is completely warmed up before doing the test, especially this time of year. I wouldn't doubt that the place doing the check is not aware of this.

sounds like it needs an Italian tuneup. And it should be tested fully warmed up. They've changed it to have some sort of meter, rather than actually just looking at it like they used to (seriously ) I strongly suspect that loose soot in the exhaust pipe will hurt you on this test. the limit is "20% opacity" - and tested at both idle and 2000RPM under partial load. Mine tested at 12.4% even though it's been recently rebuilt. Maybe check for a stuck EGR. The test is $20 and you get a free retest with that. I think you just keep trying.

Pete and Blue,
Thanks for the quick responses.......IN on a Sat. nite ......
I believe that the vehicle WAS fully warmed up...as she needed to travel some distance to said "facility".....She had stated that there "are not too many diesel test facilities in the state".
An "Italian Tune Up" may be in order.....I also need to check if I had installed the "BB". I also have some thoughts concerning the B20. I will see the parents on sunday and drive the "beast" myself......The vehicle BLOWS the doors off mine off the line!
Thanx much!
