Been thinking about doing this on the 300SD as preventative maintence. My tumbler looks as though it has been messed with before and it makes me weary.
It works flawlessly every time but I KNOW how much of a punk those things can be to have to fix if they don't rotate. I need a new ignition key anyway...mine is flunky and short (PO lost the rubber part). Is a 81 300SD supposed to have a non-high security key for the ignition? Cause mine isn't...(doors are though) |

If I replace this I will do it with the dealer accuired part...not random key.
My bug had a random key when I got it and it bugged the hell out of me. I bought a whole new set for the car. Security or non? ANy ideas? ![]() |

Non-security
My '83 300SD has non-security ignition and security door locks. Wish it were the other way around as I like to keep several door keys around in various places for "Doh" moments and that can get pricey at $23 a pop.

Okay thats exactly what I needed to know
![]() Thanks! I guess when I get some spare cash I'll snag up a tumbler and key setup from the dealer and put it in myself. Also need to get a 2nd door key made up... |

is it acceptable to drive with a bypassed ignition lock assembly?
is it acceptable to drive with a bypassed ignition lock assembly?
the ignition key in my '82 w123 (240d) failed to work. i took dieselgiant.com advice (thank you!!!) on grinding down the pin potruding into the steering column. regardless the key still did not work! i bypassed the system by removing the vacuum lines and plugging them before starting... glowplugs don't work but a squirt of WD40 does it everytime... I just short connectors on starter ad it comes right up and unplugging the vacuum lines to kill the car! my question is will continued use in this state cause any damage to the electrical sys or otherwise??? thank you for any input! john |

Cold/winter starting will be difficult/impossible.
The charging system should NOT be functional with the switch in the off position. that was my assumption too. i tested the voltage after a short run to the store and it read 13.5V!! the gas gauge cuts in and out and so does the temp gauge but all else seems to work... ty whunter for all your efforts! |

Full report on Ignition lock delete!
On my 4 speed 240D with failed ign lock assembly I:
-key remains in the in the "off" position! -connected both vaccum tubes that went to ign module together and kinked and wrapped them so the engine will run. -made manual overide for glow plugs -made manual overide for starter -turn signals don't work -somehow enough electrification is present which allows gauges work at cruise but will misread at idle. oil gauge is manual and works regardless! -engine is killed with clutch -charging system is fully functional!!! moral of the story: when visiting the wrecker and you see an Ignition module for your car with corresponding key stuck in it - GRAB IT! story of the moral: driving with no ingnition swtich ain't normal ![]() i don't think this will be doable with a 300D with turbo and especially not a second generation SD. Thank you to every one for help, hope this helps some one in return! john |
