transmission fit question

i have a 1982 300sd and i cannot
seem to find a used transmission... 722.303 or 722.416
i guess the .416 is california...

Now i see on ebay a tranny for 79/80 722.120
and i see a 87 300sdl 722.321 will either one of these work...

or what would be required to make it work...

722.303 has an electric speedo sender. Most if not all the earlier units, as well as the 722.315 have a mechanical speedo sender. Be careful with the 722.1xx, some do not have the bowden cable and some have no vacuum modulator. They will all bolt up to the diesel block, and minor length differences can be taken up by the slip yoke on the driveshaft.

I don't know about the SDL tranny, but you definitely do not want the earlier 722.120 tranny unless you want a lot of work. I would find a 6 bolt tranny - most 722.3xx should work.

The 722.321 will bolt right in. The modulator and valve body will be a bit different, as they are expecting an amplified vacuum signal. There are several internal differences such as different B1 band and piston that shouldn't affect you. Don't know if the yoke is the same.

Hey, just bumping this thread for a second. I am curious about a swap the other way. bolting a 722.303 transmission to a 603 engine. Would it fit right up the same way? hmm... I am getting ready to make my dream car, out of my 300sd, and have already picked up a factory new 722.303, but not done the engine yet. I'm wondering now if I'd rather drop a 603 in there... Any experts care to chime in?
