Vote do I buy kid cheap w116 or let you buy it

I just came back from my first look at a 1980 300sd same owner for the last 22 years. Dirt-cheap the owner’s kid thinks he ran it out of oil I did not bring my tools because I need another project car about as much as a hole in the head. The engine cranks but very slow battery is pretty shot.
Maintained well by the owner straight body the under car bushings in good condition no leaks 6 month old cheap but looks ok paint job 154k miles owner just paid registration fees for the year worn but ok interior big bad point no sunroof.
The paint job kills it as a money-making car. However my son loves it so you all vote do I go do a leak test on it tomorrow (I am pretty confident he just blew the head gasket) If it is just the head gasket do I buy it for the kid and put the freshly rebuilt head in our garage on it.
So you vote should I buy my son this car as a back up for his EURO 1985 300D. On the other hand, should I tell you all where to pick it up for $100 plus $50 towed within 25 miles of where it sits in south San Jose
Yes matt gets the car
No the car is posted for any one other than matt to buy
And boy am I going to tick matt off deciding it this way!!

IMO An SD as a back up to a D is not the way to go....I would prefer a 240 as the back up....SO NO let it go.....

There's nothing more expensive than a cheap Mercedes-Benz.

Yeah there is, a cheap BMW 7 series, and don't even think about the Italians, lol. Poor guys.

mattdave,

But it. At that price its a steal. A rustfree body, even if it doesn't run is worth much more. Wish I could find such a deal.

$150.00 towed to your house? Snag it, it'll be good for something. You could sell a few things off it and still make some change on Ebay.

In Kentucky there is some kind of law where you have to have at least on car in your yard that don't run, and I've way beyond that quota.

I set a member of this group with an 1987 300 for $4oo bucks he took his first drive in it yesterday and sent me a long excited email about how well it worked even though the master cylinder failed on the way home. He has less than 4K in a 603 1987 300 so not all low priced Mercedes are bad buys especially since we have no rust issues. The 240D is a great back up car except the kid is big and the 300sd fits him and his friend. I should maybe mention he had a nice 1979 300sd to use whenever he wanted until I recently totaled it while it was my car he mostly drove and loved it paying for all fuel and up keep. He is not pleased I am doing this but so far, there is 1 no vote and 1 yes vote
Thank you for helping me make this decision please remember to vote.

Take it!

Yeh... it will be worth more in parts or if your son gets it running... will be a good learning too! You need to buy the neighbors xmas gifts though to keep them from calling the city about your cars!
