It's funny I'm reading this. I'm going through this exact problem with my car now. I really want it to be "perfect" but I'm thinking twice after I realize how much I'm spending. I recently spent $100 just getting my tach to work again (new cable and overload protection relay). I want to do my cruise control next but can I really justify spending $200 on a new amplifier now?? Also, I want to get new floor mats but those are $100. It will probably need to glow plugs soon and I need a hood pad. Where does it stop??

Whew...........try taking the vehicle off the road for five months and replacing the head...........and the diff. Naturally, everything you find is in relatively poor shape..........so you replace it.

$2500. later it's back on the road.

Those $$$$ really add up.........and I've got the itemized list.

When I bought the SDL I had no hope of "perfection."

Then, I saw "affordable" sinking like a rock and the ripples of "stupidity" came at me like breaking waves.

I knew I had to let it go and swim for shore, or be drowned.

There may be another some day, but, well, that's another day.

$100 ha thats like just one quick order from Fastlane.

My worst week was when I first started driving the car. I ordered a new set of wheels and some floor matts about a day before the oil cooler lines started leaking. $1,800 later and she was on the road again. Now its funny at the time it wasn't.

My worst week in my entire ownership of my Camry was $150 for a new radiator when the original blew up.

Its a good thing these MB's are so much fun to drive.

Reading this post has me thinking. Since Im single, theres nobody to tell me no. I have limited myself to 100 dollars a week in parts for the MB, thats all. I can "roll over" that money to the next week if I dont use it all, but thats all I'm allowed to spend. So far, i am negative 700 in roll over money..... This weeks project is new tie rod assy's and rear sway bar links. This will make the car safe enough to be a driver, because the day I bought it, I brought it home and parked it, havent driven it because of the 2" of play in the front end, pick up the wheels and you see the tie rods moving! So I'm doing little things.

Maybe this is the reason I live in a small 1800 sqft house, but have half a dozen cars here.

Good thing is, I only have a car note on one of them!

Thanks for the site. Thanks for the post carrameow, makes me think twice about modding the car, now I must go so I can install my sheepskin seat covers.....

Oh my god...

I think I just had a glimpse of my future... Or is it deja vu...

I think you got to go with what you like to do, if it was'nt MBZ it would be golf or pool halls or beer or fishing or beer or racquet ball or excerise machines.

I like a classic body and a solid car, those plastic pieces of crap don't do it for me...

That's my 10k...

I just bought the car Im hoping it will stop at some point....but at this point I still need :

Both Pass Side Window Regulators
Rubber around doors
Paint Job
Chasing Oil Leaks
Refinish Wheels
Whatever the front end needs after I replace the tie rods and stabilizer
Misc Trim outside the car....
I'll be running a deficit for a while!!

As far as I see it, these are old cars, they're not going to be absolutely perfect. If you want it to be absolutely perfect, take it to the dealer and say "make it like new again!"

You'll need lots of money, but it'll work. I need to go check my lottery numbers now.

Ha! Oh No! not my Itemized list for parts on my cheap '87 300D, please don't tell anybody the total, Brian! Anyhow its out of date, I just bought a set of SS reinforced brake hoses ($75)
You know, I was planning to give the car to my brother. I can't think of a better car to indoctrinate him into the world of Mercedes diesels, huh?
Now that its running (the engine anyhow) I kinda think I'll install a WVO tank and add an intercooler and paint it and, and, and...

I learned that a plugged trap oxidizer can ruin your day!

Well, that's just about a new car payment. Personally, I would rather drive an old benz than whatever new POS I could get for $400/month. Anyway, that's a good rationalization for spending $$$ on my toys. That's my story, and I'm sticking to it.
