Taking my 1987 300d to the dealer, what should I ask them?

Since I'm going to be there anyways, should I ask them to look at anything? Or do anything? Is there things I should make sure they don't do?

Monday I'm getting my trap oxidizer removed!

Er, asking costs money you know. Some dealers (most?) have a N point inspection they do for used vehicles at a fixed cost. You could have them do that if you understand what is covered. Checking for leaks, quality of fluid, % of pad/rotor usage, issues with ball joints etc etc, it is on a hoist afterall. Armed with such a list you can proceed from there. This is also helpful if the dealer has someone around who has 20-30 years experience at looking at the benz and can tell if you things look good, or bad.

The question is when was the last full service done? like tranny, brake fluid, power steering filter, rad water changed? If you choose to have the dealer do this by having the trap removed won't decrease the cost.

Seems both times I've bought a benz I've been with 2K miles of having to do the next major service point ($700ish), perhaps one of the reasons the previous owners ditched the vehicle.

Mmm, if of course they have to take the intake manifold off, then cleaning it, and replacing all the glow plugs would be cheap and easy at that point.

Hmm I'm not sure what I'm getting =/

I had a feeling asking them to look at stuff will cost money >_< ahh well.

I'll see what happens. I bought the car without any prior knowledge about its service records. We had the family mechanic look at it, but he said it was normal for my car to be all slow... even though it felt like i got 50% more power from fixing a tube and changing the air filter.

What would a ,ajor service point be? Like what would they want to do? I'm at 260,000 and the last owner didn't take care of the car too much from what I can tell =(

Well on the bright side I get a loaner car! whoo hoo!

If your taking your 87 300d in for inspection, and asking questions, ask them why the rear end on these cars howel upon periods of acceleration while driving above 50 mph.

My 87 300D does it, so do many other 124 cars, gas and diesel! The question has been asked here on this forum many times, but know one seems to have a plausible answer! My car has been making this sound for the past 50,000 miles, and has not changed. I doubt it is a serious thing, or detrimental, it's just annoying!

I suspect but others may correct my thoughts. The dealer through his linked computor system might be able to access any work done to this particular car at any dealer and give you a printout if all dealer service work is entered nationally. This might be free and possible but I really do not know if it is or not myself but would ask. Asking is free.

Chips are not in your car but in their computor. As for asking them to do things it would depend on the individual dealers reputation. You can be scalped by other than indians it seems. Stood behind a lady that paid more than 500 dollars to have a headlight or simular switch changed out of her car. You may not want even one dealership bill. There are solid alternatives but you have to do a little research. If dealership has a new flashy building you will be buying part of it if you are not careful. Personally it almost felt like fraud the few times I have been stung at dealerships over the years. The bills were almost unbelievable. To be fair there are still ethical people out there but it's up to you to find them. Example. noticed last night my front alternator bearing was pretty bad and had to use the car for a trip today. Removed alternator, installed bearings and replacement stator as the original one had badly worn slip rings when I got in there. I had stator and bearings on hand from a rebuilt alternator someone gave my years ago that had failed after giving very llittle service. Took about 1 1/2 hours total and cost was zero other than my time. Wonder what a dealer would have priced it at? Before that would happen I would have got a good quality rebuilt unit and installed it myself. Say total bill for this small item was 400.00 at dealer. I would have to earn 800.00 to pay 400.00 so my real savings on this small issue was 800.00 for an hour or so of my time. Do you normally make 800.00 per hour? I know I do not.

I think the real queston you should be asking is how much do I want to spend. You certianly could throw them the keys and say "make it like new, give me another E class loaner for a few days" It may cost you well north of $10k but it's only money.

the dealer is all about asking for money, as much as they can get.
You need to find a good Independent MB mechanic, not to say your family mechaninc isn't good, but this car needs a mechanic with experience on the 124 diesels, otherwise you may as well pay a dealer to work on it because a non experineced mechanic could make a mess out of things.
Your '87 300D turbo should rocket off from a dead start like no diesel you ever thought possible. Hopefully it will after the trapectomy!

Oh yes, my '87 300D does not have a howl in the differential, its almost completely quiet, I have to listen for a tiny gear noise, although there its very slight.
