Hi:
Can someone enlighten me on how to properly test the pressure converter on an '85 300. Before it's last trip to have the swaybar replaced everything worked like new, now I have no turbo, it won't stop when I turn off the key and it shifts really bad. Smells like a vacuum line somewhere was hooked up wrong. Anyways, in trying to find the vac problem I noticed that the EGR line was plugged going into the pressure converter. I tested the EGR valve and it appears to be bad (155K miles)unplugging or plugging the line doesn't seem to make any differnce. Any ideas?? PS: I bought the mercedes CD from the parts shop, but I can't find anything on how to test the pressure converter. |

Your suspicion that the hard shifting and engine not shutting off is vacuum related is correct. The 85 turbos had different vacuum and egr setups that the 81 to 84 turbos. However, i think you should remove the egr valve and clean/soak it in solvent. These things are expensive to replace, I'm sure if you clean it, it will function. It's probably clogged with soot. My car does not have a pressure converter but I have plugged my egr line and have not experienced any problems.

There is a line that goes from the EGR into the pressure converter. It should be purple brown and white. The white and brown line goes into the large line off the vacuum pump. The other two end up connecting together and run into a black line.
Maybe this can help? -Larry [Edited by Larry Delor on 02-02-2001 at 01:09 AM]

I sprayed lots of carb cleaner ($.99 at Autozone) when cleaning the egr valve on my brothers 240D. The carb cleaner worked well, I'm sure diesel, gasoline, or wd40 would give the same results.

Runnin' smooth as silk....
I unplugged the EGR line, removed the EGR valve and cleaned it throughly with Brake cleaner. It was really clogged with a sludge like substance..almost like soft tar. I took almost a teqaspoon ful out of the bottom of the EGR valve and from the manifold where the EGR attatched. Everything I could see inside the manifold look pretty clean. I still haven't been able to test the pressure converter, and have no idea what it really does, but the car is running great now so I'll believe that the pressure converter is doing its job.
thanks for the help. |
