EGR in an Cali '85

i have been searching the forum for how to disable the EGR on my 85 cali model, but have gotten different answeres and am confused now. some say that i can just plug it up? others say it is different for the cali models and it is not as simple.

I know it was probably beaten to death before, but can someone explain (maybe with pictures) of what i am supposed to do to my EGR. is it just plugging one tube, or does it require a few hours to do.

Dan

I am pretty sure you pull the EGR tube and put a BB or similar size ball bearing in there and plug it back in takes like 30 seconds.

well

the noob that i am, i thought the EGR was the boost pressure control valve. i just need to be shown where the EGR is. that is why i would love to see a pic. or be told where i can find it (long description).

i have been going through the haynes manual and cant find anything about it. and i have gone to my car 2 times to look. but both times i was still thinking that the boost pressure control valve was the EGR, so i suck...

gosh i need my digi cam fixed.

found it, but am i just supposed to plug it up, or can i disconnect it and then put that tee in there and leave it disconnected from the EGR.

so if use a BB or something similar, i just push it in the tubing?

The easy thing to do is plug the vacuum line to the EGR valve any old way. There's a chance that an EGR valve this old will leak some exhaust to the intake manifold. If you're serious about it, you should plug the port in the intake manifold. Either put back the EGR valve for looks or leave it off for looks. Depends on how you want it to look

You're doing this for diagnostic purposes and/or off-road use only, right?

i thought the whole point of the EGR was to circulate exhaust to the intake manifold... a way of reuseing exhaust vereus burning more clean air that the California air resource board is fighting off diesels to protect

The point of EGR is to reduce NOx emissions by reducing combustion temperatures under certain conditions by introducing exhaust gas which has less oxygen than ambient air.

Less air= more smoke. What do they want? Look at most emissions websites and the 84-85's put out MORE greenhouse gasses!

Smoke is sooty but not necessarily worse for the environment than NOx. In fact the heavier the pollutant the less likely it'll make it to the atmosphere.
