will my flasher relay repair itself?

Mom and I were out and about today, i sat my drink on the console and the drinks sweat seemed to have gotten to the flasher relay.

it started buzzing like some kind of ladies personal item and annoyed the mess out of us until we returned home.

i drove 10 miles with my blinker on because it stopped the buzzing for some reason, it fealt really comfortable to leave the blinker on while puttering at 60mph on the freeway....

so the question is... if all light functions are normal beyond the buzzing when the flasher is not engaged, will it return to normal after being given some time to dry out?

Did the water get into the relay, or just the switch? The relay seems unlikely.

well, i sat the cup on the plastic table between the seat bottoms=)

i thought about halfway home... "boy this car rides well, my drink hasnt fallen over yet" then the buzzing started....

its most likely in the switch itself. if you turn on a blinker or the flashers, it stops and functions normally.

the car is a 1979 240d

Happened to me millions of times w/out your mom, you understand, spilling coffee and beer.

Hose the switch with WD-40 and it oughta be alright. You will also find that pressing the switch lightly causes the buzzing to stop. Figure that soda gummed up the contacts inside the console switch. Thats all.

You may want to remove (or at least unplug) the switch until it dries out so you don't hurt the relay. If you take out the switch, you may be able to shake some water out?

I've spilled drinks on that thing a million times... the buzzing will stop when it dries out.

If you ever spill anything sticky in there (Coke ) or you want to dry it faster, you'll have to pull it out, take it apart, and clean the guts up. It's a pretty simple device, shouldn't be any trouble.

Did the relay keep buzzing after the car was turned off? If so, I would disconnect the switch and let it dry because the buzzing sound is probably the relay cycling about 4 billion times per minute. New relay costs about $50. I doubt the switch will need anything more than drying if it was just water.

You aren't an ass. I had a spontaneous urge to type "you ass!" and I just happened to be perusing this thread at the time.

Compressed air.

How about removing the switch and hitting it (lightly) with the blowgun for 15-20 seconds. That ought to dry things out and not leave a nasty, oily residue like the WD-40 (throw that stuff away). If you are feeling really ambitious, take the switch apart and clean it with rubbing alcohol and q-tips. Re-lube with dielectric grease and reassemble. The grease will help displace the moisture next time this happens as well.

Jay.
