60 to 100 mph in W116 with 617.950:
Here is a short movie taken this afternoon in my 1978 300SD as I increased the speed from 60 to 100mph.
This was done in high gear without downshifting. Just a smooth, steady flow of power from the turbocharged diesel in 4th gear. Took about 25 seconds to complete the pull. If you look closely, you will see the oil pressure pegged at 45 psi and the coolant temperature at 150 degrees (F). That's with an outside temperature of 88 degrees (F) and the A/C on. Damn...the server won't accept a MPG File. Well, maybe I can figure a way out to host the clip somewhere else so you all can see it...Bert |

Too bad there wasn't any sound, it would be even neater to hear it. Nice job on that car. I just recently sold my 116 and miss that highway acceleration. The 116 beats the SDL there.
Thanks David

David,
Keep in mind, I had to stop my throttle short of wide open to keep from depressing the kickdown switch and driving the transmission into 3rd speed range, so that pull was at about 3/4 to 7/8 throttle in 4th speed range. I have (so far) been able to acheive 112-115mph (indicated) on this car. I am planning on swapping the 3.07:1 differential for a 2.88:1 in hopes of reaching 120mph. Have you ever seen a 617 running at only 150 degrees (F) coolant temperature with the A/C on and nearly 13.0 psi of boost??? You get a short glimpse of the temperature indicator at the start of the clip. What about those cupholders???...Bert |

It's not that I'm doubting or anything, but to get to 120 mph in the SD, you'd have to be producing over 180 hp easily.
Are the W116 SD's really that robust? That's pretty darn good. Is this another "exception to the rule" car? Also, I thought the 300SD had a 3.27 differential, and the later W126 had the 3.07/2.88 differential. If you can get to 114 - 115 mph, that engine must be singing a very high song. If this is genuine, it is extremely unusual. (Call me a hypocrite) ![]()

Doctor, the cup holders are coming along. I have a member wanting a 116 model so I need to get those going. Luckily however I built one for my '79 before being sold so I still have the measurements. All together I'm very pleased with the way members here have responded.
Thanks David

As he stated elsewhere, the car isn't stock... I'm curious as to exactly what's been done myself.
