Not bothering to check the timing chain for excess stretch after purchase of car and getting it home. Just continue driving the car until the timing chain tells you it's time to change it. Most the cars I buy are in the milage bracket for possible change even though the odometer says otherwise. Perhaps a previous owner changed it or perhaps not. Very easy to check in comparison to trying to repair the potential resulting massive damage because you did not. Good ideal for a thread Hunter.

Poor fuel will kill any IP or injectors. Actually the last time I was at the diesel shop I use that went through my injectors the lady their had a great story. Some guy bought a new GM truck with a Duramax diesel, gets his second tank of fuel and the trunk wouldn't start! I guess he got some real bad fuel it was loaded with water and crap. He needed to have his injectors cleaned, but I think the IP was ok. No air filter will destroy any engine. Actually a forum member is rebuilding a 617 (616 maybe?) where the po left off the filter and it lost compression. Pull off your air filter, drain your coolant, and throw a little water in your tank and head down a nice dusty road. See how far that gets you.

Sugar in the oil.
We recently pulled a 3208 Cat apart that was the victim of sabatage. The sad part of the story is that the engine was in an emergency back up power plant for a nursing home. There must be some real sickos out there.
