Considering 1977 300D--- your thoughts?
Own a 300e...want to pick up a 300D at a good price
Found a 1977...drove it today and this is what I came up with: The Good: Ran nicely on the interstate, great cold air, smooth shifting tranny, decent interior, much quicker than a 240D The Bad: Rough at cold start-up (it's been sitting for weeks-- I need to pump the pedal to get it to go), some engine shake (engine mounts?) play in steering (not in suspension, it's from the wheel to the box-- adjustable box?). An apparent, but insignifigant slow oil leak ( I would guess normal) The Ugly: Nice gold metallic spray job....but done over original orange color (seen in engine compartment, various chips in finish). One fog light half filled with water, trunk rear wells with several inches of water in each (I told them about the plugs) Asking price-- $2,000. California car, no rust. Engine rebuilt for $2,000 about 3 years ago. At that time the clock stopped at 128k miles. Plenty of maintanence records from Beverly Hills and Santa Monica dealerships. The paint job hurts it from my perspective (color change kills re-sale).. I also think it needs shocks...and probably some rubber bushings in various places. Signs that the exhaust, compressor, vaccuum pump replaced, a/c hoses look original. Do you think $1500 is a fair offer? Fire away. Last edited by lee polowczuk; 03-20-2005 at 10:27 PM. |
