Sold my '88 951 Porsche after realizing "speed" no longer interest me. So after a year of emptiness...I purchased, last month, the '84 300D. I just had to have another German engineered car
For all year round transportation I use my '96 Toyota 4Runner SR5. Had it since new and it will be buried with me along with the mentioned MB My wife's car is a '97 Impreza Outback, also a keeper. I have no plans ever to set foot into a dealership again. |

Volvo's - love them except the Volvo diesel
I own a 91 940 Turbo. I once had a 240 Diesel. I rebuilt the engine on that one. Boy thats a strange one. No timing chain-- a timing belt. A belt driven fuel pump at the rear of the engine. No turbocharger and a small oil sump! You couldn't compare it to a Mercedes Diesel, no way. also the 240's used to rust like hell...My next car is going to be a SAAB 900 Turbo---

I drove that Volvo diesel wagon this afternoon just for grins. 5 sp. overdrive, but only 1-4 worked. It was no rocket, but it would be acceptable. That VW diesel is loud, bangin and clangin like a Cummins. The belt in back that drives the IP from large cam pulley is an odd thing to see. It flops around back there and is very visible. The front one has a cover over it. Glow plugs are in series, and impossible to get to the back 3 or 4. Small Bosch injection pump. It took 1/3 of a can of ether to get it started, and it was almost 70 degrees. Thick black smoke when accelerating.
If someone gave it to me I would take it. Wouldn't pay for it though. JL

Is the VW diesel engine and tranny that are in the Volvo the same as are in the VW's of that day? ('82) I can't imagine the parts are easy to come by. During my test drive I turned on the blinker and the whole car died. I was in the road 5 minutes before I found the corroded fuse. Wasn't blown, just oxidized.
Give me a wagon to drive, and I'll make it smoke!

It is somewhat normal for a VW diesel to smoke and be noisy, more so than a MB by far, maybe a Volvo diesel with a VW like motor except larger is suposed to smoke more and be louder still? I still want one..

Like I said, I would love to have it, just wouldn't pay for it.
